A California Hunts Desperately To Find Strawberry Pickers By JERRY RANKIN Calif, (AP) California is looking into classrooms, kitchens and Army barracks in a desperate search for workers to harvest a multimillion-dollar strawberry crop reportedly rotting under A warm spring sun. The recruiting drive intensi. fied today as a growers' spokesman predicted that "this is just the beginning" of a crisis in California's lush fields, brought on by sustained fine weather. W. Fillerup, executive: vice president of the Council of California polnted to an acute shortage in the strawberry-rich Salinas Valley 100 miles south of San FrancisCO.

"Crops are rotting, and they are rotting because of a genuine labor shortage in spite of all the efforts by. responsible growers to recruit and maintain a doing mestic labor force," he contend. ed. Fillerup laid the blame for the crisis at the door of Secretary of Labor W. Willard Wirtz.

He said the government was told months ago that foreign work-! ers would have to be put into the lields because there weren't enough domestics. State -labor union officials, however, replied to Fillerup that if growers paid more than the $1.40 hourly minimum set by Wirtz, the crops be adequately handled. "The growers seem to think they are somehow entitled to labor if U. S. workers dun't st government supplied foreign denly rush out to compete for! jobs offering guarantee of only $5G a week gross on 211 eight-hour day, five-day-a-weck basis," commented Thomas L.

Wirtz has authorized importIng 1,000 to 1,500 Mexicans to the valley, but state employment director Albert Tiehurg said they won't show up before the last week in May. Assemblyman Alan Pattee, a Republican rancher from Salinas, said Monday Wirtz was "tco late with too little." Wirtz also approved use of workers Filipino, and Japanese already in California. He acted after the California farm labor panel recommended that. a grower request for 6,800 foreign workers he answered by use of those 1,000 plus an additional 1,500 Mexican nationals.

Wirtz personally 'toured some of the fields in late March.
