THE NEWS JOURNAL JC7. Bluie Hee woederie: Are we that WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 8, 1993 Delaware No. 3 in I-AA rankings into a shootout, it's going to be (looked upon as) our fault." WILLIAMS HONORABLE MENTION: Delaware halfback Pat Williams, who scored four touchdowns and gained 149 yards in seven offensive plays in the Blue Hens' romp, was named honorable mention in the weekly All-Yankee Conference honor roll. Maine tailback Robert Tubbs was the offensive player of the week, rushing for 89 yards and one touchdown the Black Bears' 30-27 victory over Buffalo.

BIG SCORING: Delaware's 62 points against Lehigh stands tied for ninth in Delaware history. The 1899 Delaware team set the existing scoring record in a 76-0 victory over Tome Institute, a mark tied by the 1984 Hens in a 76-0 victory over Morgan State. The Blue Hens are 27-10 in the 1990s. thusiastic about the Blue Hen defense late Saturday, based on Lehigh's 424 passing yards, but he was encouraged after reviewing the game films. "My initial reaction was that (Lehigh) completed an awful lot of passes for an awful lot of yardage," Raymond said of the Engineers, who completed 40 of 68 attempts.

"But when you consider that we had five interceptions in 14 possessions. You can't sustain any offense just throwing the ball, which they did." Certainly, the defense was a significant concern coming out of a lackluster preseason. Delaware began the later-summer session with only one returning starter in the secondary and two in the defensive front. End Domenic Bot-to's knee injury further complicated the rebuilding project. Just as concerned about the defense was Scott Acker, the team co-captain and lone returning starter in the secondary.

Acker said that he was more nervous Friday night than he had been in his freshman year and he said he became even more nervous after the Blue Hens scored less than two minutes into the game. "I'm thinking, 'Well, Lehigh is going to come out throwing the ball and the score is going to be Acker said. They prepared to begin a week of preparation for William Mary uncertain whether Delaware was that good or the Engineers were that bad in what was the season opener for both Division I-AA teams.

"I assume that they're not very good in comparison to William Mary and the rest of the Yankee Conference," Delaware Coach Tubby Raymond said of Lehigh, based on Sunday's weekly film session. "We're really, in some measure, untested. "But the game meant a lot toward our progress in that the people we expected to play well played well, and we had a chance to play everybody." Raymond expected a great deal from the Blue Hen offense and was not disappointed. With Dale Fry replacing four-year starter Bill Vergantino at quarterback, Delaware scored on the third play of the game and rolled up 609 total yards and the most points since the 1982 Blue Hens scored 62 against William Mary. ByGENEBRYSON Staff reporter DOVER Midway through Delaware State's season-opening game Saturday, the Hornets appeared to have a major problem at quarterback. Three days later, they may be looking at the pleasant problem of having too many quarterbacks. Starter Erik Jones, who was feared to be out for an extended period after suffering a knee injury Saturday, has recovered quickly and could be available to play this week JONES against Chey-ney State.

And MacAdoo Harrison-Dixon, who began the opener as a third-stringer, emerged as one of the heroes of the Hornets' 31-28 victory over Fayetteville State. "It's a pretty positive thing for us at quarterback now," Hornets Coach Bill Collick said. "We've seen now that Mac can play and we know Jones can play, so we feel pretty good HARRISON-DIXON about our quarterback situation." Jones, who was beginning his third season as a starter, went down with a twisted right knee early in the second quarter of Saturday's opener. Tests Tuesday revealed a slight sprain of his anterior cruciate ligament, but he will practice this week and could be available Saturday. "At first I thought he might've had a torn ligament and might've been done for the year, but everything's turned out fine," said Collick.

"Erik practiced a little bit on Monday and looked OK and he ran a little Tuesday and looked OK, so we know he's going to be able to play again." Harrison-Dixon will likely get the start against Cheyney, which snapped a 36-game losing streak with a 20-7 victory over Southern Connecticut last week. "I don't have a problem starting MacAdoo," said Collick. "We're not going to be in any hurry bringing Erik back. We want to make sure he's ready before we bring him back." Harrison-Dixon earned this week's probable start with a strong relief performance against Fayetteville State. After Jones was injured, two-year backup Dennis Jones took over at quarterback, but the Hornets failed to pick up a first down in five series and Harrison-Dixon was summoned to pump some life into the attack.

"It was a chance for me, but I wasn't really thinking that way," said Harrison-Dixon, a former Caravel Academy standout who transferred from West Virginia to Delaware State. With the Hornets holding a 7-6 lead, Harrison-Dixon entered the game midway through the third quarter. On his first complete series, Delaware State drove 74 yards in eight plays, with halfback Phil Anderson scoring on a 31-yard carry.
