A A August 12, 1968 ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL A-9 Dennis Chavez, Son of Senator, Dies in Capital Continued From A-1 Saturday night. No hearing was held. CHAVEZ was the son of the late Sen. Dennis Chavez, a Democrat who served as U.S. Senator from New Mexico from 1935 until he died office in November, 1962.

Like his father, the younger Chavez was born on the family ranch in Los Chavez, N.M., which ad belonged to the Chavez family since the 1769 land grant from the King of Spain. The younger Chavez was a graduate of George Washington University and the George Washington University law school. Young Chavez was a controversial figure in New Mexico and also faced death two times- once in 1958 when he suffered a blood clot in the brain and again in 1964 when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver on a Washington street. He recovered from both incidents continued his law practice. YOUNG Chavez served as his father's administrative assistant and later managed his successful campaigns for re election.

Chavez was in the middle of a political fight in 1959 when he said the administration of former Democratic Gov. John Burroughs was made up of "political hacks, bums, leeches and barnacles." The attack by young Chavez brought a reply from state Democratic chairman Seaborn Collins who called the remarks, "typical of young Denny." Young Chavez, however, said he was speaking for his father when be said New Mexico Democrats must get rid of Burroughs, who he called a misfit, if they wanted to win in 1960. Burroughs lost his bid for reelection that year. WHEN his father died in 1962, Chavez said he expected to seek the vacant Senate seat in 1964, but never announced. Former Gov.

Edwin Mechem filled the remainder of the term until U.S. Sen. Joseph, M. Montoya was elected Chavez was unmarried. He is survived by his mother, Mrs.

Dennis Chavez of Washington, and two sisters, Mrs. George Dixon, also of Washington, and Mrs. Jorge Tristani of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chavez' uncle, David Chavez is chief justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. In addition to Judge Chavez, Chavez is survived by another uncle, Jesus Chavez of Santa Fe, and four aunts.

They are Mrs. Gillie Salazar and Mrs. J. R. Gallegos of Albuquerque, Mrs.

Robert Jefferies of Washington, and Mrs. Ray Sena of Santa Fe. MRS. SENA told the Associated Press in a telephone interview that Chavez' sister, Mrs. Tristani, in Washington, told her Chavez died of a heart attack.

Mrs. Sena said funeral arrangements were being handled by Strong-Thorne Mortuary' in Albuquerque. Strong-Thorne Mortuary said Chavez' body would be returned to Albuquerque tonight. A funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Mt.

Calvary Cemetery, where Chavez' father is buried. 2 More Plane Victims Die CHARLESTON, W. Va. (P) A Piedmont Airlines plane crash here Saturday claimed its 33rd and 34th victims Sunday. Darrell Tripplett, 20, of Branchland, W.Va., died of his injuries at 11:05 p.m.

Reinheardt Jackie Robinson Ground Fire Says Nixon Part Halts Relief Of Racist Ticket NEW YORK (P Jackie To Biafrans Robinson, the first Negro in major league baseball and a traditional supporter of the Republican party, said Sunday he would support any Democrat against Republican Richard M. Nixon in the November presidential election. He said Nixon is part of a "racist ticket." Robinson, 49, said be would resign as an aide to Republican Gov.

Nelson A. Rockefeller, a post he held more than two years. "If they'll have me, I'll support the Democratic nominee to the best of my said Robinson, who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1946 to 1956 and was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1962. Robinson said Nixon had "prostituted himself" to the Southern vote at the GOP convention. He charged that Sen.

Strom Thurmond of South Carolina had influenced the choice of Maryland's Gov. Spiro T. Agnew as Nixon's running mate. Robinson declared that if southerners could hold "veto power" over the vice presidential candidate, they could hold the same power over national policy if Nixon were president. Looking dapper with his cane and beard, Custers continued teaching until 1 1905, when his blindness and age necessitated retirement. CUSTERS continued some of his hobbies after retirement, especially visiting with students at the university and playing the flute. Although blind, he could travel around town quite well and knew his friends and former students by their voices.

In 1910, at the age of 76, Custers died. He now is buried at the Fairview Cemetery. Following his death, Custers' two daughters left Albuquerque, but it is uncertain where they settled or if they married. A FORMER UNM student, Mrs. Anita H.

Thomas, recalls Custers as real gentleman." Mrs. Thomas said Custers was known as a "brilliant man, very smart," and one liked by all students. And as Ripley said, believe it or not a custodian could become a professor and continue teaching despite near blindness. And the man who filled those unique shoes was Mathias L. Custers of Albuquerque.

GENEVA, Switzerland (UPI) The International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) said Saturday night it was forced to suspend relief flights to Biafra because of heavy Nigerian ground fire. A spokesman said the last ICRC plane to pass from the Spanish island of Fernando Po to Biafra during the night Thursday was shot at but not hit.

It discharged its cargo of food and medical supplies at the secret Biafran air field and returned unharmed to its Red Cross base off the African Coast. But Friday night the chartered Swiss "Balair" plane was forced to return to Fernando Pol without reaching Biafra. Its Swiss pilot reported he did not dare to break through "the solid fire wall" of federal Nigerian anti-aircraft guns. ICRC headquarters in Geneva have requested their delegate in Lagos to intervene with the Nigerian government to obtain a guarantee of free passage of these urgent relief flights for the starving Biafran war victims. The spokesman said during the past week the ICRC plane managed to fly 49 tons of highprotein food and medical supplies into Biafra.
