I'op.itello Thursday, Nov. 17, 1966--11 Th« way they're picking this week it wwU appear that the Journal's four football "expert*" have all joined the resurgent "subway alumni" of Notre Dame University this season. All four Journal staffers predict the Fighting Irish will extend their undefeated streak over unbeaten Michigan State University in the "game of the decade" Saturday in East Lansing. Ron Peterson picks the Irish to win by 21 points, Tom Morrison sees a spread of 17 points and Joe Richmond and Van Wolverton both pick the Irish by 4. (AP) -- Forty- two autumns ago Odus Mitchell sent his first football team onto the field at Post High School in West Texas. . ·; He makes his last trip to the sidelines here Saturday when North Texas State closes its 21st season under his leadership against Chattanooga. "I'm not letting myself think about it," Mitchell said. "It kind of leaves a little pain to realize this is the last one. HEADQUARTERS "Forty-two years is a long time in your life to let go of, but I don't want to concern the team with that. I just want them ready to win another game." Soft-spoken and f r i e n d l y , Mitchell has spent his entire career as a head coach. The first half wa sat Texas high schools in Los Angeles May Host Super Bowl LOS ANGELES (AP) - The first professional football championship matching the National and American leagues -- the Super Bowl--will be played Jan. 15 in Memorial Coliseum, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Times said it learned Wednesday that NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle was in town to make arrangements for the game. But Rozelle was unavailable for comment, the Times said. The leagues must approve the site, the story said, but are expected to do so at a meeting Nov. 28 in New York. The Pro Bowl game, matching all-star teams from the NFL would be played Jan. 22 in the 195,000-seat Coliseum. Post, Slaton, Childress, Pampa and Marshall, where his teams won 165 games, lost 44 and tied eight. After World War II North Texas State summoned him in 946 to become only its seventh lead coach in more than half a century. Before the start of the current season, Mitchell announced his coaching retirement because 'it's time someone else does t." During the two decades here his teams won 114, lost 83, .led nine and captured or shared nine championships in he Lone Star, Gulf Coast and Missouri Valley conferences. With a 7-2 won-lost mark this fall and the nation's fourth best orward passing team, the Ea|les just might get a bowl offer. "This kind of talk happened when we were winning good and went to Drake," he said, "and everyone knows what happened to us up there." North Texas was upset 17-13. As he prepares for his 433rd and final walk into the field, Mitchell finds "it isn't easy but t guess it is over."
