B4 Albuquerque Journal YOUTH EXPRESS Friday, August 23, 1996 miosis to continue carrying PlayStation Psyg REVIEW Upcoming titles include 'Destruction Derby 2 and 'WipeOut XL' for years, and it doesn't look any better on PlayStation than on the hand-held unit, but you can get into this one if only for a little while. "WRESTLEMANIA, THE ARCADE GAME" (4 stars): Built by Acclaim for the Saturn, this game is a hoot. You choose one of the World Wrestling Federation's top wrestlers from Lex Luger to Bam Bam Bigelow and try to weave your way to a world championship or intercontinental title bout. Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler provide fast and funny commentary, and this qualifies as the fastest fighting game we've tried. It has realistic wrestling moves but plenty of the superhuman, NBA Jam-like stuff too.

We wish the game had a true sim mode where none of the "speciality" moves would work, but it's still one of the best fighter-style games available. It's certainly the most fun. RATINGS: 5 stars: best available, must have; 4 stars: excellent; 3 stars: good; 2 stars: average; 1 star: below average; no stars: don't even rent it. All the levels are based on classic Bugs Bunny cartoon episodes. In one, called "Bully for Bugs," you i have to collect detonation devices to blow up a bull (tip: use the bull to kick you into the air so you can blow open the cave and collect all the goodies inside).

One cool thing about this game is that when you get to the boss level, you sometimes have to beat him strategically. "OFF-WORLD INTERCEPTOR EXTREME" (3V2 stars): Pure fun, this one. Crystal Dynamics doesnt waste a lot of time with this game for Sony or Saturn (they are identical) they put you in the cockpit of an off-road jeeplike vehicle armed with your choice of weapons. You can switch between cockpit and chase views on the fly; you can go head-to-head or against a computer. This one even pokes fun at the video sequences in a lot of games, having two Beavis Butt-head shadow images in the lower portion of the screen during a video segment that is obviously overacted.

Plug in, shoot a lot and have fun. "BUST-A MOVE ARCADE 2 EDITION" (2V2 stars): These multicolored balls are dropping on you, see, and you're armed with a gun to try to stop their descent. The key is to align three or more like-colored balls in a row. Do this, and they disappear. Don't do it enough, and you will.

OK, Nintendo's Game Boy used this style of game star game and a batter's box view. If you want to use a relief pitcher, you've still got to warm him up (a cool feature). New developments: updated stats from the 1995 season, a choice of five different season lengths and postseason awards. Game play suffers from lack of improvements. You have to wait a split second after making contact, and players get awful small when you do.

Electronic Arts' "Triple Play" 32-bit game is the best sports simulator we've seen, and for 16-bit games, "Gold" bows only to EA's "Madden '96." The game is fun to play and addictive. You've got every feature you'd want, from stats to schedules to choice of views. The action is realistic and fast. Heck, you can even change the Atlanta Braves to your local favorite if you like. "BUGS BUNNY IN DOUBLE TROUBLE" (4 stars): For Sega 16-bit, this game brings to life all of your favorite Warner Brothers characters.

The plot is definitely "What's up, Bugs has a mad scientist after his brain. To get away, Bugs that's you has to go into a dreamland, sidescroll and outwit Loony Toons such as Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam. Not all of the levels here are sidescrolling. Some are 3-D level (all characters here are based on 3-D sprites). By Langston Wertz Knight-Ridder Newspapers Psygnosis Ltd.

has reached an exclusive agreement with Sony to continue distribution of PlayStation software. This agreement, once in danger of being discontinued, will be in effect through March 1997. Psygnosis is PlayStation's top developer in Europe and is among the top three in the United States. "Destruction Derby" and "Wipeout" each have sold more than 1 million copies. Upcoming titles include "Destruction Derby 2" and "WipeOut XL." Also watch out for the racing titles "Formula 1" and "Thunder Track Alley." Other titles to be introduced are "adidas Power Soccer," "Codename Tenka," "Discworld II, The City Of Lost Children" and "Island of Dr.

Moreau." Now, on to the reviews: "WORLD SERIES BASEBALL" (3 stars) AND "TRIPLE PLAY GOLD" (4 stars): These are two baseball games that will keep 16-bitters, who long for new games these days, pretty happy. Sega's "World Series" isn't too different from last year's model. You get 700 players, all the teams, an all- sportsline 821-1800 For all the scores. The Journal. If you're somewhere where the odds are you're going to have such harassment or put yourself in danger, or if your family is such that you think you could be kicked out of your home, don't come out. Although we encourage adults to push that envelope and come out as much as possible, that's not the best advice for young people. If you can't come out, at least try and find somebody, somewhere, that you can confidentially talk to, so that somebody in the world can affirm you. Q.

What happens if you do come out, and someone who you trusted doesn't respond in a positive way? A. Our first advice is that, if it's possible, retract your statement. If it's believable, retract it. If your choice is to be on the street or retracting your statement, consider retracting it. That's not lying that's survival.

If that's not possible, try to get some help, if you can, to work things out with your family. If there's a guidance counselor or clergyman or teacher who might help you negotiate, call on them. If your family is really giving you a hard time, try to keep a low profile and reach out for support from other places. If you're totally kicked out, reach out for help quick call Child Protective Services, call PFLAG (Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), a gay community center or any of the numbers in the book that help kids to find safe shelter. i Learning to trust Q.

What do you do as a straight teen when a gay friend comes out to you? A. A lot of these young people talk about their straight friends, and it's very encouraging how many of their close friends have been supportive. Most of the young people we interviewed had one or two friends, and sometimes more, who were incredibly supportive and affirming right from the beginning. There's a great quote in the book from a young woman named Stone under "Advice to Straight Teens." She says, "Just remember when we come out to you, we're no different five minutes after we told you than we were five minutes before. And it doesn't mean we're in love with you." Q.

If a gay, lesbian or bisexual teen were to buy this book or find it in the library, what is the most important thing you would want them to come away with? A. You're not alone. Gays are everywhere. Even if you're not connected with it yet, there's a national gay youth movement of young people who are standing up and speaking out and claiming their rightful place in the world, and you're part of that just by being. We really want to let young people know that if they're getting harassment or criticism or rejection, it's not about them.

It's the world that needs changing. By Tonya Pendleton Knight-Ridder Newspapers Usually, when adults write "coping" books for gay teen-agers, they use a real pity-party tone. A new book, "Free Your Mind," is different. It's a practical guide for young people who are sure of their homosexuality. There are chapters on how to deal with schools, how to come out to family members, the community, religion, HIVAIDS and how to become politically active in the gay rights movement.

Most importantly, the book lets gay teens talk about their lives. In an interview, Ellen Bass, a lesbian who co-authored the book with Kate Kaufman, gave refreshing, and sometimes surprising, answers. For example, her advice to gay teen-agers whose families react badly to their coming out is to lie: Just take back what you said and go back into the closet. The advice she passes on to straight teens whose friends are gay: Don't worry, they don't want to date you. Question: Why did you feel young people were a particularly important audience? Answer: The statistics on the risk factors for gay youth are really alarming.

They have a high rate of dropping out of school, being kicked out of their homes and winding up homeless or living on the street. Depression and self-esteem issues when you're condemned by the world are high, and the rate of gay youth suicide is considered to be about 30 percent of all youth suicide. That's really a disproportionately large and alarming number. One of the points we try to make in "Free Your Mind," over and over, is that the hardest time to be gay is when you're young. The older you get, the more choices you can make about where you live and how you can surround yourself with accepting people.

When you're young you don't have a lot of those choices because you're not very independent yet. On not coming out Q. What happens if you're a gay teen in a place where homosexuality is just absolutely not accepted when the isolation is not just mental, but physical? A. We talked to one young man who was in his first year in college. He grew up in rural Arkansas, which is about as conservative as you're going to get.

He had to stay closeted. He was an effeminate young man, so he got a lot of teasing all the way through school. But coming out would have made it much worse. He didn't even come out to his parents until he was away at school. He went to the University of Memphis and although that wasn't the most liberal school, there was a gay youth support group there and he joined it.
