I-IDAHO STATE JOURNAL Wednesday, November 18, 1959 Potvin, Eberle Don't Agree On Respective Party Goals Tuesday night meeting of the Idaho State College Institute of Government found two state legislative leaders at odds over the goals of their respective parties. D. (Bill) Eberle, Boise, Republican floor leader in (lie 1959 Legislature, and Gregg Potvin, American Falls, assistant Democratic floor leader, tried to define their party goals and those of the opposition. Potvin charged that (ho "so- called vested interest groups carry more weight in Republican circles tiian in Democratic circles," and that the Democratic party tends more to represent "persons of moderate means." He said Democrats have the in- ternatiolanism of a Woodrow Wilson, the compassion for the peo- ple of Franklin Roosevelt and the carthincss a Harry Truman. He contended also that Democrats arc "noisier," and that they "care more deeply." He said that the Democratic party is also interested in the important issues.

"The Republican party in 1956 national convention called Adlai Stevenson's insistance on banning nuclear tests catastrophic nonsense," Potvin said, "and yet this same party comes completely un- glucd over cranberries." He said that when the nation has been under the Democratic party it has had a higher sense of national purpose and when under the Republican party "we tend more towards heavier chrome plating on refrigerator handles." Eberle contended however, that his parly is the parly of respon- DONT BE TUBE BOOB Where Else Could You Learn How to Shave Sandpaper? Discussing Republican foreign affairs, he contended thai Eisenhower flew to Korea and the Republicans ended the Korean War, while "the prior administration there." He mentioned the Eisenhower trips to other nations as examples of an aggressive foreign policy. Eberle also cited peace and prosperity which he said have been in existence since the Eisenhower administration took office. He said the Republican parly does the things it said it would do.

Eberle contended that the Republican party has faced up to the fact lhat it must make the dollar what it is worth and lhat in times of peace and prosperity a balanced budget is necessary. Still discussing fiscal matters, he said Ihe "responsible position of the Republican party was that you can't cut taxes without cutting something else." Eberle said the Republican party can give leadership and teamwork and more of it than the Democrats. He said Ihe party has men like Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Arthur Flemming, who will tell the its popular or there is "a problem with cranberries." He also asked "where would we, have been" without the leadership of the late Secretary of State John Foster Dulles?" Acting as commentators on the panel were Arthur B. Hillabold, assistant -professor of economics at Idaho State College, and Mrs. Eugene H.

Smilh, Idaho Falls, voters service chairman for the League of Women Voters of Idaho. HiLlaboid said, as Eberle and Potvin tell it, both parties sound good. But he asked if that isn't the problem with American politics, too much emphasis on vague ethical terms like dynamic and responsible. Mrs. Smith commented that she is interested to know that the people in Idaho, under a law passed in the 1859 Legislature, now have to declare their politics and ask for cither a Democratic or Republican ballot in the primary.
