Former Chicago Cubs star Billy Williams may be named director of player personnel for the National League HAMPTON, Ga. Bill Elliott ended the NASCAR stock car season Sunday by winning the Atlanta Journal 500, beating series champion Dale Earnhardt at Atlanta International Raceway, Elliott won second place in the Winston Cup standings with his sixth victory this year. Earnhardt's second-place finish put him over $2 million in season winnings. He won 11 races and 21 top-five finishes in 29 sjtarts, joining Elliott as drivers to surpass $2 million in a season. Elliott won $2.3 million in 1985.

-1 Ricky Rudd was third, followed by Bobby Allison and Allison's son Davey, the top rookie this year. The 23rd win of Elliott's career, his third in four starts, was by 10.1 seconds. Elliott's Ford Thunderbird averaged 139.047 mph. He won $74,200. His season earnings top $1.5 million.

1 TENNIS: Top-seed Steffi Graf ended a sensational season Sunday, overcoming Gabriela Sabatini for her first Virginia Slims Championship. Graf, in her 11th baseball club, the Chicago Sun-Times said Sunday. The Times said an announcement due this week could make Williams one of the sports' highest-ranking blacks.
