Katherine Galvin as Catherine and John K. Herzog as Petkoff periodically rise to the occasion with some amusing character work. Trary Maddalone as Raina and Forrest Broadley as Sergius look lovely, but stumble through their lines as if they aren't quite certain what is expected of them. Shaw is difficult even for classically trained experienced actors. Despite the play's gently topical anti-war theme, which makes the play unusually popular, this particular cast seems to have bitten off a bit more candy than it can chew.

Vernon Lobb's set is flimsy but charming, particularly in the second-act garden setting. The period costumes are attractive and appropriate except for Madame Petkoff which looks a tad tacky. By Marjorie Atlas JOURNAL CORRESPONDENT My high school drama teacher was fond of remarking in regard to belabored performances, "The mind can only absorb as much as the fanny can endure." Sitting through the Santa Fe Community Theatre's production of George Bernard Shaw's three-act comedy, "Arms and the Man," my mind absorbed little beyond the complex set changes and my fanny often sent messages that if wished to be elsewhere. The pleasantly amusing satire is filled with typically Shavian bombast. The story deals with a pragmatic Swiss mercenary with a passion for chocolate creams, who takes refuge in the bedroom of a young Bulgarian woman after his unit is dispersed by an ill-chosen cavalry charge. The young woman, Raina, is intrigued by the exhausted Captain Bluntschli, even though she is the daughter of a Bulgarian major and the fiancee of the reckless cavalry officer, Sergius.

Many complications ensue with good-natured conflicts and posturing involving Raina and her bumbling parents. Points are made about class struggle revolving around a pair of servants. The fickle betrothed couple investigate their shallow feelings for each other. Raina ends up with her likable "chocolate soldier." Sergius pairs up with the ambitious servant, Louka. Allowances can be made for opening night confusion but, strangely enough, the stagehands executed their double scene change with more ease and professionalism than the company of actors managed during the entire performance.

Shaw demands a well-coordinated, fast-paced, disciplined and confident approach to the dialogue. Very little of this skill seemed apparent in this production. Director Margaret Lewis has chosen quite wisely to refrain from insisting on English upper class dialect for the actors, but has inexplicably allowed actress Andrea Good Marjorie Atlas, a Taos free-lance writer, is a playwright and dramaturge, who spent the past three years teaching theater and directing new plays at New Mexico State University.
