The series was shot on location for nearly four months in London, Nice, Amsterdam, New Orleans and the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. The men's maximum-security prison was used, Miss Smith says, because the women's prison looked like a college dormitory and didn't appear too threatening. Miss Smith's role requires 16 disguises.

In one, she is a bleached-blonde Southern belle who always has the vapors. In another, she is Rusty Storm, a brassy Texas heiress with a tendency to drink too much. "I was surprised and delighted when David Keith was cast in the offbeat role," she says. "He was signed before me and that bit of imaginative casting was one of the factors that made me accept. That made me think it might be an unusual production.

I felt the same about my casting, since I'm not your typical TV beauty." Nevertheless, Miss Smith says she hesitated several weeks before accepting the offer. "I had some reservations about it," she admits. "On the first read I thought it was like a melodramatic soap opera. I didn't want to do a soap opera. I wanted to know who else was going to be in it.

I was hoping they'd get some stylish people to give it a 1930s caper movie look. And I wanted them Madolyn Smith portrays a confidence woman in "If Tomorrow Comes." "FT" os ANGELES Madolyn Smith, i I a star of the new CBS mini-series 111 "If Tomorrow Comes," recalls A that when she was 15 she flew from Thailand into Laos to perform with a singing group at a local high school. "It was right in the middle of the war," she says. "My parents were terrified that we'd be shot down. We performed within walking distance of the Mekong River." At the time she was attending school in Bangkok, where her father was an American military adviser.

The itinerant life of an Army brat, plus a few harrowing experiences, undoubtedly helped prepare Miss Smith for her role as the clever bunco artist in "If Tomorrow Comes." She stars as Tracy Whitney, a workaday bank clerk transformed by a series of misfortunes into the sophisticated, world-traveling confidence woman. The seven-hour series, adapted from the best-selling book by Sidney Sheldon, will air in three parts, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on Channel 13. It also stars Tom Berenger as her romantic interest and partner in bilking the public, David Keith as a sinister insurance investigator on her trail, Richard Kiley as her mentor, Liam Neeson as a policeman bachelor's degree in theater arts from the University of Southern California in 1979.) to pursue the humor of the book. "What I didn't take into account was what I could lend to it. Or what the other cast members would lend to it.

Of course, it's still a soap opera, but a very classy soap opera. It's fun and adventuresome." Miss Smith was born at what was called Sandia Base in Albuquerque, the third of five children. But she grew up in such places as Honolulu, Washington, Leavenworth, and Bangkok. She didn't return to New Mexico until her father retired in 1974 as a colonel in the Army and settled in Albuquerque. (She was graduated from Sandia High School in 1975 and received a "Army bases are like selt-containea cities," she says.

"There was very little you had to leave for. Military life can be great for children. I was lonely about being separated from my friends, but I enjoyed it, too. As an adult I. appreciate all the advantages I had, all the places I lived in.

And I had four brothers and sisters, so I had a lot of company." It was in Thailand that she joined a performing group designed to promote the good image of American youth in Southeast Asia.
