A14 ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Saturday, April 27, 1985 TV-23 Remains on Air During Sale Discussions By Rick Nathanson JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Albuquerque television station, KNAT, Channel 23, has received so nettling of an llth-hour reprieve. Station general manager Dave Cavileer said an investor on Friday indicated interest in buying the station. But the potential buyer wanted the station to remain on the air while negotiations are under way. The owners of the station were encouraged enough by the offer, Cavileer said, that they will pay to keep the station going a while longer. Exactly how long the station will remain on the air will be determined by the length of the negotiations for its sale. The negotiations will begin Monday. The station was scheduled to sign off the air as of today. Instead, Cavileer said, the station will continue to broadcast music videos from 8 a.m. until about midnight. "I've already sent back all my other programming," he said. The music videos are beamed by satellite from a company in Florida and the cost to the station is minimal, he said. Cavileer declined to identify the investor. He said the man has a "manufacturing interest in Albuquerque and he lives somewhere back East." Earlier this week, Cavileer said two other groups of investors were also looking at a possible purchase of KNAT. Even though the station will remain on the air, the majority of the 33 employees will still have to be let go, Cavileer said. About 10 people, including some management, engineering, administration and production workers will remain on the job. "At this point, I'm not going to attempt to aggressively market the station until the deal is consu-mated," the general manager said. "I have mixed reactions. I'm glad that something is in the works because it's buying us some time here. But the deal could fall through, and there is already a lot of anxiety around here."
