But he is rarely tempted to paint what he portrays in a photograph. He believes, "photography is often conceived in the mind of the artist long before the camera is put into motion." Old Town photography dealer Andrew Smith associates the aesthetic tradition of such photographers as Newsome with that of famed photographer Edward S. Curtis whose sepia portraits of the Zunis and other tribes have had such lasting appeal a kinship of intention which Newsome accepts.

Smith points out the vital part New Mexico plays in 19th- and 20th-century photography. Of the fine vintage and contemporary prints he sells to the country's museums, many were done in the state. Public collections in New Mexico reflect the deep interest scholars and archivists have in photography. Smith praises the University of New Mexico's collection and mentions that the State Photo Archives alone hold 100,000 prints. Yet, he and Newsome mention that most private III tar miimi uakm 4'.

Finally1, on the morning of Independence Day, he saw what he wanted a golden-red glow in the sky reflected on the geological monuments and light on a small lake in the middle distance. "I got the same butterflies in getting up so early and seeing the world come to life as I'd get before an athletic event in high Newsome recalls. "I hope the viewer can feel an emotion, the thrill I still feel from seeing these pieces." His 40x60-inch photograph, "Monument Valley at Sunrise" is a landscape in the grand manner.

It will be on exhibit at the State Fair Fine Arts Gallery Saturday to April 28 with approximately 80 other photographs taken by New Mexico's Certified Professional Photographers: Bill Bell, Nita Rose Bell, Newsome, Jack Grimes, Bob Hill, Nathan McCreery, Bob Martin, Jon Schreiner, Winston Sturgen and Phyllis Peck The photographs are exhibited in conjunction with the annual showing of the New Mexico State Fair's permanent collection of more than 100 paintings, sculpture and works of Indian "This year is our first opportunity to offer recognition to traditional fine photogrpahy as an art form," says gallery director Peggy Winkworth. Until now, no state institution has honored New Mexico's Certified Professional Photographers. The CPP could be considered the academy of professional photography. Requirements for membership are similar to those for the National Academy of Design: Members must make their livings as photographers, pass a written on photographic history and technology administered by the Professional Photographers of America and must submit 15 photographs to a jury. Criteria for judging the works are; the impact of the photograph, its composition, technical considerations of color harmony and tonal values (black and whites are judged more critically for value control), lighting, and in the case of portraiture, the expression and character of the model.

Ms. Tabak, who curated the CPP show, has served as a board member of the organization's state, branch for several years. She is known for family portraiture in outdoor settings and landscapes that include moving water. A former high school English teacher, Ms. Tabak studied photography in Manhattan at the School of Visual Arts and the New School Social Research.

She finds Jjthe lighting and natural beauty of New Mexico a challenge. In New York City's Central Park rain or clouds often prevented her from completing an outdoor shot with a model. But under the brilliant and dependable light of New Mexico, she uses a system of shading she devised to control the play of shadows on her subjects. Newsome credits a number of his concepts to continuous study of art, especially that of Europe's master painters, in books and museums. "Vagabond" portrays a man whose worn face emerges from A "Old Master" darkness as the light plays mainly on his eyes eyes that follow the viewer's motion in all parts of the room.

"Weetah" is an Indian portrait transferred and impregnated into canvas before being sealed with gel." The brushmarks of the gel provide a "painterly" surface to this limited edition work. Although photography is frequently exhibited at Smith's own gallery, at private studios such as Newsome's at Quivera, at Ruth Ramberg Gallery, and Photogene-sis Workshop and Gallery, as well as the Albuquerque Museum and university galleries, the show at the fairgrounds will contribute to public awareness of a distinctive form of photography.

These artists share the romantic "grand vision" and technical mastery of a long tradition dating back to the beginning of photography in 1846. The New Mexico CPP will hold a reception today from 7 to 9 p.m.; the State Fair Fine Arts Gallery reception is Saturday from 5 to 7 a THOUSANDS OF EXPRESSIONS IN FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS at the SIXTH ANNUAL p.m. The gallery is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. On weekdays, CPP members will be present to discuss their work and answer questions.
