Saturday, September 2, 1995 B8 Albuquerque Journal 1 Legals Legale Legals Legale Legals OT takes rock Legals I over progressive NATHANS ON RICK I Media Writer The new management of Santa Fe radio station KIOT-FM (102.5), abruptly changed music formats Friday, abandoning its adult progressive sound for rock 'n' roll oldies of the 1960s through the 1980s. The change became effective at five seconds after 1:02 p.m., (a bow to the station's assigned frequency), and a receptionist reported that hundreds of phone calls immediate-, ly began pouring in to the station. Most of the callers were less than enthusiastic about the new format, she said. "When you change a format, those who were fans of the former playlist feel disenfranchised," said Craig Hanson, president of Simmons Radio Group of Salt Lake City. Simmons recently purchased the station from Elliott McDowell, owner of Wizard Broadcasting, based in Santa a reported sale price of $1.6 million.

The progressive music of KIOT had become part of the Santa Fe scenery for the last five years. Trendy stores and galleries com-'. monly piped in the station over their speaker systems. The format change comes as a result of "extensive research in the marketplace," Hanson said. "We found there was a compelling need roll.

Hanson said KIOT will retain its call letters. Three on-air staffers lost their jobs in the shuffle, he said. A lawsuit brought by former Albuquerque newswoman Jane Metzler against KOB-TV, Channel 4, has been settled. Metzler, who now works for New York radio shock jock Don Imus, could not be reached Friday for comment. Her Albuquerque attorney, David Plotsky, confirmed that a settlement had been reached on the pending litigation.

"The terms of the settlement are confidential and without any admission of wrongdoing," he said. "The parties agreed they will not discuss or release additional information concerning the litigation or its settlement." Not surprisingly, Plotsky would comment no further, nor would KOB general manager Mike Burgess. Metzler was fired from KOB in January 1994 and replaced by Carla Aragon. Metzler subsequently filed a discrimination charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She alleged that she'd been fired from her weekday co-anchor job so station management could replace her with a Hispanic anchor and improve their ratings.

After six months without a ruling by the EEOC, Metzler asked the EEOC to give up its jurisdiction, as was her right under federal law. She then filed suit in U.S. District Court. for this kind of a radio station. In other words: "Research shows the number of people who listen to progressivealternative is not as large as the number of listeners (read: advertisers) who will tune into this," Hanson said.

The new format, ARRO, All Rock and Roll Oldies, is different because it is "music intensive," Hanson said. There will be fewer commercials and announcers will not speak much. "This isn't something we invented. This is part of a format that is sweeping the nation," he said. KIOT now becomes part of a radio market saturated with no less than a dozen stations already some format variation Concj xakuIatLoni.
