It's no secret that Cal State Northridge's football team is among the worst defensively in Division I-AA, especially against the run. Montana State, obviously wanting to confirm it, ran all over the Matadors in a 31-20 Big Sky Conference victory Saturday in front of 9,357 at Reno H. Sales Stadium.

"People just want to load up and pound on us," said Jim Fenwick, Northridge coach. Why not? The Matadors (3-4, 1-2 in Big Sky play), who probably dropped out of playoff contention, went into the game allowuig 401.7 yards per game, ranked 96th in the nation against the run at 201.7 yards per outing. Montana State (4-2, 3-1), which relies on the passing of Rob Compson, went to a ground attack from the start, finishing with 228 yards rushing and 380 yards total. It came one week after the Matadors limited Weber State to 156 yards rushing in a 30-20 victory at North Campus Stadium. But Weber State didn't have tailbacks Travis Wright and Eric Kinnaman, who each rushed for 100 yards, the first time a Montana State player has reached that milestone this season.

Wright had 25 carries and Kinnaman had 22. None of their runs were as damaging as Kenyatte Morgan's 91-yard kickoff return with 11:15 remaining to put the Bobcats ahead, 28-20, only 18 seconds after Northridge pulled to within 21-20 on Manny Marquez's 44-yard field Please tee MATADORS, C13 CSUN Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics Next meeting: Monday When: 7 p.m. Where: Fernandeno Room, Satellite Student Union, southwest corner of Lassen and Zelzah streets Topics: Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell will speak; a budget subcommittee report will be offered; a sicussion will take place on how to conduct a suvery of student opinions Associated Prea Marc Goodson of Northridge sacks Rob Compson, who passed for three Montana State touchdowns. A. Baptist Village Christian Coach Mike Plaisance got a trophy to honor the winner of their annual Alpha League showdown, and dubbed the contest the "Bible Bowl." But after L.A. Baptist defeated devotion and loyalty of 49-year-old Rudy Lugo, football coach at Canoga Park High.

He has been a Hunter seemingly forever. He probably sleeps on green and white bed sheets at home. He played for Canoga Park from 1962-65, returned as an assistant coach in 1969 and hasn't left since. His wife is a Canoga Park graduate. His two children attend Canoga Park.

There have been at least 10 players on his teams through the years whose mothers or fathers he taught in class. Every time Lugo looks at his star player on this year's team, linebacker-tight end Michael Shoemaker, he remembers that the kid who used to dress three lockers down in 1964 was Shoemaker's father, Michael Sr. "The years between high school and now, in retrospect, raced by," Lugo said. "I guess that's the way life is." Through the good and bad days, Lugo has remained dedicated to Canoga Park. "I love Canoga," he said.

"The people are special. The parents, even when you lose, have been very loyal. All they want is a good experience for their boys." Lugo's Hunters are 4-2 this season and 3-0 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference. They're always underrated, but never doubt what Lugo has meant to the players and the school. "He gives you the tools to win.

You just have to play your game," the younger Shoemaker said Shoemaker, 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, is one of the best players in the Valley Pac-8 Conference. On Friday, he caught six passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. And he sure knows how to relax. On Saturday morning, he took off with his father to catch striped bass at Pyramid Lake. Westlake defensive tackle Karl Holley (6-3, 230) is the early choice for Marmonte League defensive player of the year.

He has 14V4 sacks. "Karl Holley is playing out of his head," Warrior Coach Jim Benkert said. "We've turned him loose." El Camino Real might have the City Section's best freshman-sophomore football team. The Conquistadores (6-0) are led by twins Jonathan and Justin Graham. Jonathan, a quarterback, has passed for nine touchdowns and run for seven.

Justin, a running back, has scored eight touchdowns and rushed for 851 yards The mother of Hart quarterback David Nelll provided a warm greeting when handing out programs before Friday's game with Canyon. "Be nice to No. 11," Anita Nelll said. "That's my Former Alemany and USC running back Terry Bamum is continuing his path to one day become president of USC. He's taking classes toward obtaining a Master's degree in education while working full time as the department business manager for USC's College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

He also became a father when Alexander Michael was born on Aug. 17. "He was at a USC game three weeks old," the proud father said. As for his goal of becoming USC president, Barnum said, "The more I get into administration, the more I learn President Steven Sample's job isn't so easy." It was the third consecutive victory for the Knights (5-1) over Village Christian. The past five Alpha League championships have gone to the winner of the game. L.A. Baptist's Tim Feirfeil was a menace to the Crusaders (4-2). He caught 10 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

He also returned a punt for a touchdown, picked up a fumble and rushed for 15 backup Scott Collins, outdueld Pierce's Dan McMullen, who completed 26 of 48 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns. "I lost 15 pounds last week," Racius said. "But I'm fine. Coach Gary Barlow told me Scott was going to come in in the second quarter. He just wanted to give everybody an opportunity to play.

Kasahun and Serratos were credited with identical times of 20:51, with Miguel Galindo of Ventura fourth in 20:55.

"Julio just came by me," Serratos said. "He opened it up and I couldn't go with him. I gave up on first at that point I just didn't want anyone else to come by me." Serratos, a San Gabriel High graduate who won his first six races of the season, held second place until the last 10 meters of the race when Kasahun sped past him. "He got me, Coach," Serratos said to Eddie Lopez after the race. Lopez didn't seem too disappointed because Glendale won its third team title in four years with a 46-point total Saddleback was second with 72 points, followed by American River of Sacramento with 130, Fresno with 136 and Ventura with 176.

Cross-country: Glen-dale sophomore runs third as Guevara of Trade Tech wins at Santa Barbara. By JOHN ORTEGA TIMES STAFF WRITER SANTA BARBARA "Julio has gotta win." Joseph Lopez, 11 -year-old nephew of Glendale College men's cross-country Coach Eddie Lopez," said that about Vaquero sophomore Julio Serratos midway through the men's race of the Santa Barbara Invitational at Shoreline Park on Saturday. But no matter how fervently Joseph Lopez cheered, Serratos lost his first race of the season when he placed third behind Julio Guevara of Los Angeles Trade Tech and Michael Kasahun of Fresno City. Serratos defeated Guevara by 20 seconds to win the Golden Coast "We ran well," Lopez said. "I told the other guys to go out a little bit slower than usual because I thought we had been going out too fast.

"The other guys need to run off the pace during the first part of the race instead of going out with Julio." The other guys included Rafael Ramos, Arbi Nazarian, Jose Merino and Omar Orendain, and they implemented Lopez' plan perfectly, running conservatively for the first IV miles before moving up through the pack. None of them were among the top 30 runners after the first mile, but Ramos finished 10th in 21:45 with Nazarian 13th in 22:04 and Merino 14th in 22:06. Orendain rounded out the Va-queros' scoring in 18th at 22:13 with teammates Juan Fernandez and Ilmar Rodriguez 23rd and 27th in 22:23 and 22:27.
