The Tide played with its back to the wall much of the game but always managed to come up with the play that killed Auburn's big scoring chances, and there were many in the nationally televised game. Alabama's famed defense stopped Auburn on the one-yard line in the waning seconds of the third quarter in one of many! key plays. Alabama killed another drive just minutes later when John Mosley intercepted an Auburn pass on the one. The play that ended all Auburn chances came with about eight minutes to go in the fourth bama had another touchdown. On the first play of that scoring drive, fullback Steve Bowman went 52 yards up the middle to the Auburn 25.

The Tide made short yardage to the 23 on the next play and then Alabama quarterback Joe Namath faked out the entire Auburn defense and passed 23 yards to Ray Perkins for the touchdown. That touchdown meant every- itself safely in command after having been battling for its life just seconds earlier. Alabama, which trailed 7-6 at halftime, scored its go-ahead touchdown on the opening play of the second hah" when Ray Ogden took the Auburn kick seven yards deep in the end zone and went right up the middle 100 yards for the marker. Steve Sloan ran for the two points and it was Alabama into the lead 14-7. But Uiis didn't take the determined and fighting Tigers out of the game.

They were on the move again and pushed the ball to the Alabama 24 before Moseley picked the pass right out of the hands of its intended receiver on the one. (AP) Fifth- ranked Texas, heading for the Orange Bowl, cracked a rugged Texas AM defense hi the second half Thursday and defeated the Aggies 26-7 in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game. With a capacity crowd of almost 66,000 looking on, including President Johnson's two daughters, Lynda and Luci, Texas scored 19 points in the second half to take its eighth consecutive victory in this series which began in 1894. The victory for Texas, last year's national college football champions, was the ninth this season against a single 14-13 loss to Arkansas, champions of the Southwest Conference.

The Aggies finished with a 1-9 season record but looked for awhile as if they might be able to pull an upset. The score was 7-7 at halftime and AM had momentum, scoring its touchdown on a two-yard run by sophomore Joe Weiss with only 25 seconds remaining in the half. Jim Lindsey kicked the extra point. Texas had scored its first half touchdown on a one-yard run by quarterback Marvin Kristynik. David Con way kicked the point.

The Longhorns used a big break in the third quarter to begin to pull away from the Ag- gies. On fourth down with Phil Scoggin back to punt for AM, center Tom Murrah snapped the ball over his head and Scoggin was pulled down in the end zone 'or a safety. AM then had to kick from its 20 and Phil Harris brought it aack to the Aggies 45. Stalled at the 32, Conway boomed a 42- yard field goal, 'and Texas led 12-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Aggies, held to minus 14 yards rushing in the second half didn't threaten again, and Texas pushed in two more touch- Jowns in the final minutes of fourth quarter.

It was the first game this season the Rockets were held without a touchdown. The loss knocked them out of a tie for first place hi the western division with the Canton Bulldogs, who end their season Sunday against winless Joliet. The Rockets went into the contest with an average of 32 points per game. Toledo jumped into the lead on a 25-yard field goal by Tom Taber in the first quarter. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) Rookie Pete Gogolak booted a 33-yard field goal with eight sec onds to play Thursday and brought the Buffalo Bills a 27-24 American Football League victory over the San Diego Chargers, Gpgolak's kick climaxed an uphill battle for the Bills, who trailed by 10 points on two dif ferent occasions. The Bills were behind 24-14 with less than seven minutes to play, then turned a safety, a touchdown, a two-point conversion and Gogolak's field goal into their 10th victory in 11 games this season. Buffalo's last-period comeback started when San Diego quarterback John Hadl was thrown for a safety by linebacker Mike Straiten after the Chargers had held on downs on their own one. Charlie Warner returned Hadl's free kick 40 yards to the Charger 18 and Buffalo quarterback Daryl Lamonia went over from the one five plays later.

That made it 24-22, San Diego. An attempted two-point conversion on a run by Lamonica failed but the Chargers were called for holding and the Bills quarterback made good on his second try-this time from the one-yard line. A Buffalo interception, the fifth of the day, set the Bills hi motion for their whining field goal. Stratton picked off a partially deflected pass from Hadl on the Buffalo 44 and the Bills moved 'the ball into field goal Late Field Goal Wins For Bears range on four straight carriei by fullback Cookie Gilchrist. Until the safety, the Western Division-leading Charters appeared on the way to their seventh consecutive victory.

Lance Alworth caught four passes for 185 yards and two San Diego touchdowns. A 53-yard scoring pass from Keith Lincoln to Alworth on a halfback option early in the fourth quarter had apparently put the Chargers out of reach. After they converted, they led by 10 points. Alworth also caught a touchdown pass from Hadl on a play covering 63 yards. Hadl passed 17 yards to Don Norton for the other Charger score.

Buffalo, the AFL's top offensive team, gained 287 yards rushing and passing. The Bills had to rely on their defense for scoring oppor- most of their tunities. First half pass interceptions by linebacker John Tracer and halfback Gene Sykes set up the first two Buffalo touchdowns. Halfback Joe Auer plunged one yard for the first and starting quarterback Jack Kemp, an ex-Charger, went one yard for the second. Gilchrist, the league's leading rusher, paced the Buffalo offense with 87 yards in 21 carries.

Despite his size, Garrett is unusually rugged and hard to bring down.

This year in nine games he's gained a net 863 yards, averaging 4.4 per carry. Garrett doubtless is aware of it, but in Capt. Jim Carroll and the Notre Dame defensive team, the Irish lead the nation in rushing defense. The enemy ground attack has been held to an average of only 61.3 yards a game. USC quarterback Craig Fertig has other backs to employ, of course, notably fullback Ron Heller and a sophomore halfback, Rod Sherman.
