In one of the county's more spirited races, and with more than half of the precincts unofficially tallied, Okey A. Mills apparently was well on his way to. a third term as sheriff.

The Pinecrest Sanitarium business manager, who also is chairman of the Raleigh County Democratic Executive Committee, was unofficially credited with 17,134 votes to 8,182 for his Republican opponent, C. W. (Bill) James of Prosperity. Democrat Walter James defeated Minor Scott for county commissioner 17,423 to 9,290 with counted." Steve L.
