Mahler, who leads the major leagues in victories, allowed all five Expos runs in 4 innings. Montreal downed Atlanta at Montreal and handed Rick Mahler his first loss after seven wins. Sheepskin THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Dwight Gooden held Philadelphia hitless through 6 innings, finishing with a three-hitter while striking out 13 Friday night as the New York Mets beat the Phillies 5-0 in New York. George Foster hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the fourth inning and Gary Carter rapped a three-run double in the seventh to back Gooden to his fifth victory in six decisions.

Gooden has won three straight, and a crowd of 46,143 watched the Mets win their fourth straight game. CARDINALS 9, GIANTS 3: Tom Herr, the National League's leading hitter, delivered a two-run single to crack a seventh-inning tie and then doubled home two runs in the ninth as St. Louis rallied to beat San Francisco at Candlestick Park. DODGERS 1, PIRATES 0: Jerry Reuss allowed four hits over 8 innings and Greg Brock singled home the game's only run in the sixth inning as Los Angeles nipped visiting Pitsburgh. CUBS 6, PADRES 2: Ryne Sandberg homered to spark a seventh-inning rally and Richie Hebner belted a three-run homer in the ninth as Chicago won at San Diego.

RANGERS INDIANS 2: Gary Ward highlighted a three-run fifth inning with a two-run double and Charlie Hough and Dave Rozema combined on a six-hitter to lead Texas to a victory over Cleveland at Arlington. Hough, 3-1, struck out five, walked three to pick up his second win over Cleveland in six days. Rozema replaced him with two on and one out in the ninth and got the last two runs for his second save. RED SOX A's 4: Reid Nichols followed Bill Buckner's one-out lOth-inning double with a single to right that gave Boston a on the mound again today at some time. But whether he'll start or appear in relief is still up in the air.

Lardizaval struck out the side in the fourth and seventh innings. He now has an 8-0 record. His brother, Rubon, was the winning pitcher in the Indians' quarterfinal game. He defeated Aztec, 10-0, in a six-inning game.

"I don't feel we've played a real good game like we're capable of yet," said Indian coach Ed Sordyl. "We've played decent. If we hit the ball real well (today), then I think we have an excellent chance to win. "I'm pleased with what we're doing. We've gone out and won 19 games without a loss."
