New Dental Clinic Opened For Mercer Adolescents PRINCETON (RNS) Mercer County State Health Director N. H. Dyer announced Wednesday that today would mark the second day of the operation of a new dental clinic in the county.

The clinic is to be operated each Friday. morning at the Mercer County Health Department as the dental phase of a pilot demonstration project in total pediatric care. The clinic is unique in the history of dental clinics in the state, in that treatment will be limited to adolescents. Lack of finances and professional personnel has often made it necessary to limit dental treatment to a certain age group and as a consequence most i i throughout the state center their programs around elementary school children. In this program, however, all of the patients will be adolescents.

It is hoped that by teaching these young people the importance of good dental health habits, they, as potential parents, will teach them to their children. This program represents one phase of a team approach to the health problems of adolescents which may subsequently be extended to include other age groups. Not only will the clinic be of immediate benefit to the citizens of the area in providing for much needed health care, but it will also be of value in obtaining information relative to the feasibility of utilizing a similar approach in other areas of the state. Approved by the Mercer-Mc Dowell Dental Society, the program will consist of two parts an educational phase and a total treatment phase. Member, of the local Dental Auxiliary have given their time to provid a series of four classes on hy giene, nutrition, the importanc, of primary teeth and mainten ance of a healthy mouth.

The Mercer County dentist; are volunteering then: time fo clinical services in the nev. program. The notable interests and support of the local dental profession has made it possibl to establish this program, Dr Dyer continued. Initially, the program wiil get under way with four pa tients. As each completes th educational phase and individua dental treatment, another pa tient will be added.

The pa tients are part of the total pe diatric care program which i under the local coordination anc direction of Dr. Meryleen Smith pediatric consultant for Matern al and Child Region III.
