B9 homes in her development. would be out of character for nutrias, according to Kimmel. H. Lloyd Alexander operations supervisor of Delaware's' state Wildlife section, promised to check out Bailey's neighborhood-He also doubted but wasn't ready, to dismiss completely the possibility that nutrias were in that area. "Anything is possible," Alexander, said.

"But that's akin to grizzly, bears being in my back yard in Woodside." Woodside is south of Dover in Kent County. He guessed that Bailey had seen a rat. One more reason the experts question the presence of nutrias: Kimmel said that if nutrias were on the islands, their distinctive pellets would be there in abundance. Alexander, who checked the islands up "Anything is says H. Lloyd Alexander of Delaware's state Wildlife section.

"But that's akin to grizzly bears being in my back yard in Woodside." close from a boat, said he saw no such pellets. The experts also have said the islands aren't the sort made by nutrias or muskrats or beavers. But James L. Goodwill, a Wilmington oral surgeon who owns a vacation home along Silver Lake, said he has seen an animal in the lake that could be a beaver. After reading about the islands, he decided it might have been a nutria that he has seen swimming in the lake.

Goodwill's property is on Chesapeake Street, the northernmost street in Dewey Beach. From the dock behind his house, he said, he has seen the animal swim from that area to a point near the islands. "For the past few months, we've been trying to tell what the hell that little thing is," he said. "It's a fast swimmer. I could see its head bob in the water.

By BRUCE PRINGLE Sussex Bureau reporter REHOBOTH BEACH The mystery remains: The origin.of the dark, lumpy islands in south Reho-both's Silver Lake still is unknown. But publicity over the islands has enabled some property owners to at least feel that they haven't been seeing things.

Seeing the islands which are several feet high, several feet wide and about 50 yards or less from shore, near Delaware 1A was shocking enough. They appeared in recent months, and they seem to be growing. But some people also were sur- irised by animals they have seen ately. More on that later. There has been speculation that the water level in the lake had fallen drastically during the dry summer, allowing underground mounds to surface.

But David H. Deibler, a full-time local businessman and part-time island-watcher, said the islands have shown no sign of shrinking as rainfall has increased. The possibility of some sort of natural underground occurrence also has been raised. But state geologists discount that idea. The most popular theory has animals as the builders of the isles.

One suspect is the nutria, an acqua-tic, muskrat-like denizen of the Southeast that has worked its way north. But there had never been a reported nutria sighting in Delaware. Until last Thursday. Betsy Bailey, who lives about three blocks from Silver Lake, said she went out her back door around 11 o'clock that night "and there was this horrifying thing." "It was ugly, and it was big," Bailey said. "'It stood on its hind legs.

I just screamed." It wasn't a rat, a raccoon, an opossum or a groundhog, she said. The next day, as she was riding in an automobile, she saw an article in The Morning News on the islands that was accompanied by a drawing of a nutria. "I almost fell out of the car when I read it," she said. Bailey, who runs a home-furnishing business, was convinced that a nutria is what she saw at her Robinson Drive town house. But there are doubters.

Fred Kimmel, a state wildlife biologist in Georgia, where nutrias are common, said it is unlikely but not impossible that a nutria would live that far from water. He said he never has seen one stand on its rear legs. Bailey said the animals and others like it are burrowing under Record Births Christiana ALLEN Jackie and George, 11 Sue Lane, Newark, Sept. 22, daughter.
