Harriman Memorial Award forjbeing the safest major railroad in the United States' 1 The award was presented to Union Pacific System chairman John Kenefick by W. Averell Harriman and Federal Railroad Administrator John H. Riley during ceremonies in Washington, D.C. The gold medal culminated an intensive safety program begun In 197 according to Jerry R.

Davis, Union Pacific Railroad vice president-operation. Davis and Gerry P. Burns, Union "Pacific Railroad director of safety; also attended the ceremony. The Houston Terminal Railway received the gold medal for switching and terminal railroads, while the Port Terminal Railroad Association, also of Houston, won the silver medal. Both are owned in part by Missouri Pacific Railroad, an operating company of Union Pacific System.

Union Pacific Railroad previously has won Harriman safety awards 20 times including 17 gold medals, since the program was started in 1913 by the late Mary W. Harriman in memory of her husband, Edward H. Harriman. In recent years the program has been carried on by a son, W. Averell Harriman, leading U.S.
