Valle Vista Has Special Classroom organized one of the largest and most extensive community education programs in the public schools. Community Education classes served Berkelev Health Proaram and thn Tit In 725 children and adults this year. JTdlll. NORTH AREA at Valle Vista Elementary School is a self-contained, full-day program for students exhibiting behavior that interferes with their ability to learn within the regular classroom environment.

It is the goal of this special class to bring the student's range of behavior within the limits of the regular classroom. New School to Open The 1982-83 school year will be an exciting year for all of the Edmund G. Ross Elementary School staff, students and community. The new school facility will be located at 6700 Palomas NE. It is expected to open in December of 1982 for grades K-5.

Taft Has Side by -Sid? Program The Side-by-Side program, serving a wide range of severely handicapped students from both the North and South Valley, has been located at Talt Middle School since 1978. Side-by-Side students this year participated in the Albuquerque Very Special Arts Festival. or ii uuiuo Haises Funds Mock Trial Competition This year 14 Del Norte High School students participated in the 4th Annual State-wide Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the New Mexico Law Related Education Program and the State Bar of New Mexico. The Del Norte Speech Team took 1st place in the State for the fourth year in a row. Anne Karkkainen, Rick McCutchan and French Stewart qualified for national competition.

Career Exploration Class Cibola High School has a new Testing Facility and a Career Exploration class both located in house trailers on the south side of campus. The Career Exploration class helps special education students learn to understand and operate an impressive array of power equipment. Century III Winner Valley High School senior Laura Gomez was named a state winner of the Century III Leadership contest. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship as a state winner and then won another S500 as one of ten national finalists. Six Valley students represented New Mexico at the Academic Decathlon in Los Angeles during April.

Valley won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal. School Improvement at West Mesa The West Mesa High School Improvement Team and the Positive Discipline Committee have developed plans for: a 9th grade basic skills program; a handbook for all students, a positive approach tc discipline in which all students experience a measure of success Pilot Program at Freedom Freedom High School is piloting the Random House High Intensity Learning System (HILS2) in its reading classes. HILS2 is a self-paced, individualized management system utilizing learning materials from more than 50 publishers. Creative Writing at Adams The new Creative Writing class at John Adams Middle School is publishing the periodic John Adams Panther Paw for the community. The class is also preparing the 1981-82 yearbook.

The journalism class is continuing to publish the monthly newspaper, the Panther Press. Tiger Pride Truman Middle School has Tiger Pride. Tiger Pride is a program of rewards based on the belief that the students who don't cause problems at school deserve as much attention as those who do. Some aspects of the program are awards assemblies, honor roll movie, student of the week award and a budget for each teacher to reward deserving students. Distinguished Teacher Award Miss Rosetta Flippin, Cleveland Middle School teacher, was selected as a distinguished teacher this year.

The jazz band at Cleveland was chosen the outstanding school band in Albuquerque again this year. Career Guidance Institute For the second year, Garfield Middle School participated in the Career Guidance Institute. This program, which is a joint effort of the Chamber of Commerce and APS, is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore career interest. McKinley Community Education The McKinley Middle School Community Education Council has The Safety Committee at the new Puesta del Sol Elementary School has the responsibility of developing school policies and rules that create a school climate that is safe for all children. The second phase of building at Puesta del Sol will begin this month.

Zuni Community Uses School The Zuni Elementary School building and the school grounds are being used by the community. The users are Cub Scouts, Brownies, youth groups, dancing groups, Parent Faculty Club, the Special Education Diagnostic Center, musical groups, Altamonte Little League, Duke City Dashers, PAL, Boy Scouts, and other community groups. School Plant Selected for Display This was the first year of operation in the completed Marie M. Hughes Elementary School The school was selected by a jury of architects to be displayed at a meeting of the American Institute of Architects and the American Association of School Administrators. Video Curriculum Project The Video Curriculum Project at Griegos Elementary School has continued to be a focus of attention not only at Griegos but throughout Uie district, state and nation.

Teacher' Participate at TLC Teachers at Governor Bent Elementary School have participated in various workshops at the APS Teachers Learning Center (TLC).

The full-time computer is an Apple II Plus micro-computer. This computer is being used by teachers in many different ways. The part-time computer never actually comes to the school.

Instead a terminal is sent to the school, and staff "talks" to the computer via telephone lines. MacArthur Is Center School MacArthur Elementary School is a center school for children with communication disorder problems. MacArthur's unique program in Special Education is supported by a specially trained staff. The speech pathologist, occupational therapist, adapted PE. and counseling services are important at MacArthur Story Time at Mission Avenue First graders at Mission Avenue Elementary School tried something new this year In order to get parents and relatives involved in the world of books, the school invited them to read and tell stories to their children in the school library on Fridays.

"Future Think" Sessions A series of meetings called "Future Think" sessions were held this spring at Cor rales Elementary School. It is important for students, teachers, and schools to have many types and styles of programs. Skill Development Gains Made Both the Open Court Headway Program and Computer Math have continued to show strong gains in skill St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was the recipient of $1,107 from a marathon held recently at Lavaland Elementary School. Wednesday Story Hour Parents and children, ages 3-5, come to Story Hour at 9:30 a.m. every Wednesday at Ranchos Elementary School. Decreasing Enrollment Causes Closing Montgomery Elementary School, a school of high academic excellence over the past 27 years, will be closing its doors this year, a victim of decreasing enrollment. Montgomery has been a model of good staff and community rapport, high academic expectations from principals, teachers and parents, and dedicated involvement by parents and students.
