McKean said that neither KOAT nor Pulitzer has yet offered him another position. "I wasn't doing anything so I offered my services around to see if there was some way I could be of some help to somebody for a while," McKean said. Station general manager Dave Cavileer said a representative of Albuquerque Broadcasting which owns the station, contacted him Tuesday evening from Los Angeles and told him "we are going to go black tomorrow (Wednesday)." Cavileer confirmed last Wednesday that due to financial problems the station was going to sign off the following Saturday. However, on Friday he announced that a potential buyer for the station had requested it remain on the air while negotiations were going on. The owners of the station agreed to continue paying for music videos, the sole type of programming on the station, which were being aired from about 8 a.m. to midnight. If the station were to be sold, Cavileer said, "It takes at least 60 days to get a license changed through the FCC.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Graham Hirst Lippincott, two sons, two daughters and 14 grandchildren. Services were scheduled for Saturday. for a period of time." Hebenstreit said McKean offered his services at a time when KGGM "is in a state of flux, and while we decide what I'm going to be doing here, as far as our table of organization goes." Hebenstreit said his own dual roles as news director and a corporate administrator of the CBS affiliate are time-consuming. In other changes at the station, Hebenstreit said that two reporters would be leaving soon for other jobs in broadcasting.

Reporter Meribeth Sloan on Tuesday handed in her letter of resignation, saying she had been offered a position as a TV reporter for another CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City. Ms. Sloan has been at KGGM for about IVi years. The resignation is effective May 10. Noon sports anchor and report-, er Phil Gonzales, who has been with the station for five years, is tentatively scheduled to leave in about two weeks, Hebenstreit said.

SENIOR CITIZENS ALWAYS $2.50 By Rick Nathanson JOURNAL STAFF WRITER John McKean, former KOAT-Channel 7 news director, begins a new job today as assistant news director at KGGM-Channel 13. John Andrew Hebenstreit, KGGM's news director, said Tuesday the position was temporary and would last "probably a matter of months." McKean unexpectedly stepped down from his job at the ABC affiliate on April 11. At that time, station manager Max Sklower Hearings Begin for The first of a series of closed-door hearings concerning the firing of the KUNM-radio news director Marcos Martinez was held Tuesday afternoon in the University of New Mexico administration building. Two days later, he was notified that he had been reinstated to his job until May 8, and he was offered the opportunity to request a UNM personnel hearing. The station owners "are still talking to three people" for the purchase of KNAT. One of them, he said, is a local person, the other two potential buyers are from out of state.

However, the discontinuing of the station does mean that all but five of the station's 33 employees will be laid off, he said.
