University of New Mexico assistant baseball coach Larry Jaster announced Friday night that he will leave the program to take a coaching job in the Atlanta Braves' organization. Jaster, who has been at UNM'for four years and is given credit for the vast improvement in the Lobo pitching staff, will coach for the Sumpter Braves in the Class A South Atlantic League.

Jaster finished his major league career with the Braves, and also pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos. He received his master's degree in physical education in 1977 from UNM. Before joining head coach Vince Cappelli, he was head baseball coach" at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. Jaster's son, Scott, was an early draft choice by the New York Mets in January's supplemental draft.

Scott, a Cibola High graduate, finished second in the nation in batting average, hitting .556 at Trinidad (Colo.) State. More Baseball Brigham Young came back from a disastrous first game to topple Hawaii 6-4 on Saturday and earn its sixth Western Athletic Conference baseball championship. The Rainbows trounced BYU 26-14 in the day's first game, forcing a final and losing match-up against the renewed vigor of the Cougars. The championship gives Brigham Young, the WAC Northern Division Champions and now 47-23 on the season, an automatic slot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association regional playoffs that begin next Thursday at eight sites around the country. Jal defeated Tularosa 7-6 Saturday in the Class AA A state baseball championship game played at Albuquerque Academy.

Veteran pitcher Larry Gura, twice an 18-game winner for the Kansas City Royals, was placed on waivers Saturday for the purpose of giving him an unconditional release. The action was taken to make room on the roster for outfielder Lonnie Smith, who was acquired Friday from the National League's St. Louis Cardinals for minor league outfielder John Morris. Track And Field Czechoslovakian "Wonder Woman," Jarmila Kratochvilova, scored a difficult double in the 400 and 800 meters Saturday in the Pepsi Invitational Track and Field Meet. 'J 1 Lovington, Eldorado Girls Win Florence Leads Eagles: Wildcats Defend Crown By Eddie Candelaria JOURNAL CORRESPONDENT There was little doubt that Eldorado and Lovington had the best girls' track teams in the state.

It was simply a matter of making it official. Led by high-point individual, Terri Florence, who finished with 23 points, the Golden Eagles capped off a perfect season by winning their first state crown Saturday at Wilson Stadium. They finished with 79 Vi points, comfortably ahead of second-place Hobbs which had 45. Alamogordo finished third with 23; while Del Norte was fourth with 21 points. It was the Eagles' lOth-straight meet victory this year.

And, in the Class AAA competition, the Wildcats had little trouble defending their crown as they placed first in six events and finished with 70 points. Tucumca-ri was the runner-up with 58, followed by Aztec with 30, God-dard with 21 and Robertson with 17. In AAAA, Florence easily defended her title in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 25.62 and 58.59, respectively. But the Eagle senior was upset in the long jump competition by Hobbs sophomore Cassandra White who leaped a record 19-2V4, easily besting the previous mark of 19-flat set back in 1980 by Lynnae Warren of Highland. Florence placed second with a jump of 18-4V2, followed by Carlsbad's Patricia Green at 17-9V2.

In the run, Gallup senior Verna Woody won her second consecutive title in the event by beating favored Del Norte runner Yvette Haran. Woody surpassed her own state record by almost 20 seconds, clocking a 10:13.20. Haran followed with a 10:14.57. In Class AAA, Tucumcari's Lynne Frey won high-point honors with 24 points. She placed first in the long jump with a leap of 1734; and won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-6.

Other double winners included Lovington's Amy Bellah who easily defended her 100- and 200-meter titles with times of 25.62 and 58.59, respectively. And Hot Springs senior Wendi Miller won the shot put and discus, breaking her own records in the shot. And, she broke a 10-year-old record in the discus with a hurl of 128-1. The previous effort was registered by Tucumcari's Tammy Foote who had a 124-8 back in 1975. Rattler Michelle Montoya captured both the and 800-meter runs, winning both those events for the second straight year.

She clocked a 4:58.08 in the 1,500, finishing ahead of Laura MacLehose of Albuquerque Academy. She ran the 800 meters in a time of 2:22.70. 4 4" i JOURNAL PHOTO MARK HOLM JOURNAL Steve Brawley of Eldorado, left, and David Maez of Rio Grande duel in the 800-meter run at Saturday' meet. Maez won the race for the second straight year. state track Go East AAAA, AAA Crowns lamogordo, Lovington Boys' Teams Capture State Titles in Runaway By Frank Maestas JOURNAL SPORTS WRITER Hobbs sprinter Markus Terrell won the 100 and 200, but was thwarted in his bid for a triple when he was upset in the 400 meters.

Terrell had set a state record in Friday's preliminaries at 48.3. But in Saturday's finals he had to settle for third as Alamogordo's Keith Robinson just nipped Sandia's Chris Crane at the tape. Robinson was second in last year's meet. Rio Grande junior David Maez was successful in his bid to repeat as the 800 meter champion. Another AAAA repeater was Del Norte's Glenn Morgan in the 3,000 with a state record time of 8:39.9.

Lovington was led by sprinter James Hilliard. Hilliard was easily the outstanding athlete in the AAA meet: He was a triple winner for the second straight year. He successfully defended his titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. The Lovington speedster had no trouble in the shorter sprints, but in the 400 he had to come from behind in the final 15 yards to nip Artesia's Cruz Juarez. Hilliard and Lovington, however, had to share a little of the glory with Ruidoso's Cisco Bob.

Bob also defended his two championships from last year the 1,500 and 3,000. He won the 1,500 in a AAA record time of 4:02.13. In the Class AAA premier event, Chris Barela of the champions nipped favorite Greg Kozlowski of St. Pius in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Kozlowski, who set a meet record of 38.2 in Friday's preliminaries, had a slight edge going over the last hurdle.

But he lost his balance and stumbled, allowing Barela to beat him to the tape. Kozlowski fell to the ground as he hit the finish line and pounded his fist on the artificial turf in frustration. He knew that miscue had cost him the gold medal. Kozlowski lay on the ground until Barela came by to console him and help him to his feet. Barela also won the 110 low hurdles in 14.63, .33 seconds under the state record he set Friday in the preliminaries.

The other double winner in AAA was Lovington's Robert Gonzales. He defended his title in the shot on Friday and came back to capture the javelin on Saturday. One defending champion failed in his attempt to repeat St. Pius' Greg Williams. He was be'aten by two inches in the long jump by Richard Williams of Deming.

The winning leap was 22-4. Boxing Rocky Lockridge was favored to successfully defend his World Boxing Association junior lightweight title for the third time today against Wilfredo Gomez of Puerto Rico, who wants another title. Auto Racing Brazil's Ayrton Senna in a Lotus-Renault captured his third straight pole position Saturday in tense final qualifying for Sunday's 43rd Monaco Grand Prix. Terry Labonte was the top qualifier Saturday to take the pole for NASCAR's Grand National Budweiser 500 stock car race at Dover Downs International Speedway. Golf Corey Pavin shot a 2-under-par 68 and stretched his lead to five shots Saturday in the third round of the $500,000 Colonial National Invitation Tournament.

Pavin, who has led or shared the lead all the way, completed three rounds in 198, matching the tournament record and equaling the low 54-hole total of the year. It wasn't even close. Alamogordo won four events and scored in 12 events, and Lovington took nine firsts as the two east-side powers captured the boys' Class AAAA and AAA -track and field championships on Saturday at Wilson Stadium. Alamogordo won its crown with 66 points. Del Norte was second with 31 Vi.

Las Cruces Mayfield was third with 29'2 points followed by Hobbs with 24 and Eldorado with 22'j. Meanwhile, the Wildcats had no competition in winning their second straight AAA championship. Lovington had 78 points followed by Grants with 40, St. Pius with 28 and Ruidoso with 26. As if Alamogordo needed any help, it got it anyway, and early, from district rival Hobbs.

The Eagles easily won the first race of the evening, the 400 relay, but were disqualified for passing out of the zone on the first exchange. That elevated Alamogordo to first and earned them 10 points. Alamogordo took only four firsts, but it won three relays and was second in the other for a total of 37 points.
