Housewife Loretta Swit wants a breast implant; widow Janet Leigh gets a facelift from a quack and almost dies; and businesswoman Lee Meriwether submits to an eye-lift to win back an old flame.

Producer-director Joanna Lee deals with the myriad emotional problems connected with cosmetic surgery and offers helpful hints to the female audience. (8 m. Channel 4). GREAT PERFORMANCES 'Brideshead Revisited." Part IV. (Repeat) "Sebastian Against the World." Anthony Andrews' Sebastian, who is perhaps the most fascinating character in the Brideshead gallery, dominates the hour.

He combines inner anguish and outward anger as he loses his grip on life. He creates a full-blown, crystal clear portrait of a confused, and tormented being who's on the verge of losing control and knows he can't stop himself. (9 p.m. Channel 5). MAGIC OF DANCE "What Is New." (Repeat) The origins of modern dance (1909) are examined in this captivating hour.

London's Contemporary Dance Theater provides the most interesting example of modern dance but the highlight comes last when Mikhail Baryshinkov dances "Le Spectre de la Rose" wih Dame Margot Fonteyn (10 p.m. Channel 5). MOVIE "Cover Girls." (Made-for-TV 1977) (Repeat) Silly and improbable pilot film that tried to imitate "Charlie's Angels" but didn't make it. Two gorgeous actresses, Cornelia Sharpe and Jayne Kennedy, play models working as undercover espionage agents. Slick but empty.

(Midnight Channel 13). A I By FRED ROTHENBERG NEW YORK (AP) Connie Chung, the new anchor of the refurbished "NBC News At Sunrise," solicited any and all questions during a recent press get-together. One inquisitive sort asked what her salary was. To make certain everybody in the back heard the question, Ms. Chung repeated it.

"Somebody wanted to know what I'll be wearing on my first day to work." Welcome to "The Connie Chung Show." Even without a drum roll and cymbal crash, it was a stand-up comedy aet that Joan Rivers would envy. On display was the witty, spunky personality NBC bought when it wooed Ms. Chung for a reported $425,000 from her local anchor chores at CBS' KNXT in Los Angeles. Of course, NBC considers Ms. Chung a talented journalist.

But, in today's television climate, journalism won't do it all. Just ask the sober Roger Mudd, who was dumped by the "NBC Nightly News" the same day Ms. Chung was frolicking with the media. NBC wanted someone to create a new morning for "NBC News At Sunrise," which this very morning replaces "Early Today." The importance of "Sunrise" is that it leads in to the more important and more profitable "Today" show. When that lead-in broadcast was "Early Today," with Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley, it wasn't different enough from "Today," with Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley.

"We made a mistake having Jane and Bryant do that show," says Steve Friedman, executive producer of "Today." "It wasn't special." It also wasn't doing well enough in the ratings against ABC's "World News sively trying to get it with an entirely different show. It revolves around Connie. Her career will rise and fall on this show." "This is a personality medium," says Gerry Solomon, executive producer of "We'll have a spontaneous anchor who's a major talent." Translation: If viewers recognize that all three networks offer comprehensive early morning newscasts, maybe they'll switch to "Sunrise" because perky Connie Chung is reading the news and having fun with her sidekicks: weatherman Joe VVitte, sportscaster Bill, Macatee and business insider Alan Abelson, editor of Barron's. Ms. Chung is the only solo news act in the morning.

She'll be competing against Steve Bell and Kathleen Sullivan on "ABC News This Morning" and Bill Kurtis and Diane Sawyer on the "CBS Early Morning News." "I like sole anchors," says Friedman. "That's one reason why (Dan) Rather wins at night. He's the guy. Connie is our anchor. She'll interview Abelson, she'll point out to Macatee what she does or doesn't understand." And when she finishes palling around with her three morning men at 7 a.m., her plan is to be available to report stories for "Today" and the "NBC Nightly News." Ms.

Chung, a former CBS News correspondent, says she accepted NBC's offer because it provided anchor work, news reporting and election coverage. Besides her weekday work, Ms. Chung will anchor Saturday's "NBC Nightly News." "I felt if I didn't go out there and seize 1984, I would miss it like I did 1980 and 1976," she says. "This job will really make me suffer. And that's what I really want to do." PflOE.LF OT OO t-j'F Er-J I ME I Saturday's pu.le Answer to 'Sunrise'' Anchor Connie Chung This Morning." Friedman says an increase of 500,000 TV homes for "Sunrise" could mean double that for "Today," which used to be the preeminent breakfast broadcast and now is well behind ABC's "Good Morning America" and a shaky second to the "CBS Morning News." In the past year, the three dawn newscasts "Early Today," "ABC News This Morning," and the "CBS Early Morning News" have attracted about 4 percent of the nation's 83.3 million TV homes.

Friedman thinks the time peri6d's audience potential could approach 10 percent, and he's putting the entire burden on Ms. Chung's slim shoulders. "The research says the audience is there," Friedman says.
