C2 The News-Journal papers Friday, Sept. 27, 1985 Scoreboard Major leagues 1 ft- 0 dtfMfe Mets' Gooden stifles Cubs 3-0 Associated Press CHICAGO The unusual becomes the usual when Dwight Gooden takes the mound. Gooden had just finished muffling the Cubs' bats on ight hits and contributing an RBI single in Thursday's 3-0 over Chicago, and New York Manager Dave Johnson was asked, with just a dash of humor, whether it was "just your basic shutout without brilliance." "How can you have a bad game," Johnson replied, smiling, "when you don't give up any runs?" Taking account of Chicago's eight hits, Johnson added, "I know he was in trouble a lot, but I've seen him get out of trouble so many times, I've got to wonder when he really is in trouble. "He's past the point where you even think about a relief pitcher for him," said Johnson. The shutout was a club-record eighth for Gooden this Cardinals 5, Phillies 0 PHILADELPHIA ST.

Gooden (23-4) walked two and struck out seven. He is 5-0 against the Cubs this season.

His earned run average dwindled to 1.51, the best in the NL, and Gooden has not given up an earned run in 48 innings. The Mets gave Gooden all the support he needed in their first at-bat. Mookie Wilson led off with a double off Chicago starter and loser Johnny Abrego (1-1). Wilson moved to third on Wally Backman's single, then came home on Keith Hernandez' run-scoring single. That stood as the game-winning hit, extending Hernandez' major-league record single-season record in that category to 24.

The game was the season finale between the two clubs, with the Mets taking the series 14-4. That was in sharp contrast to 1984, when the Cubs topped the Mets 1 12-6 on the way to winning the NL East title. Reds 6, Braves 1 CINCINNATI Andy McGaffigan pitched seven strong innings and doubled home a run with his first hit of the season to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Orioles 9, Brewers 1 MILWAUKEE Cal Ripken and Alan Wiggins each hit two-run singles in a seven-run Baltimore third inning to propel the Orioles to a 9-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Seven Milwaukee pitchers were shelled for 16 hits in the game, as the Orioles prevented a series sweep and broke a four-game losing streak.

Dennis Martinez (13-9) scattered seven hits, struck out one and walked three, for the victory. Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 1 TORONTO Rookie Jeff Sellers tossed a three-hitter and Mike Greenwell, also a rookie, belted his second two-run homer in as many games to spark the Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in a game delayed three hours and 18 minutes at the start by rain. The first-place Blue Jays lead second-place New York, which was rained out Thursday, by 5 Vi games in the American League East. White Sox II, A's 7 OAKLAND, Calif. Ron Kittle slammed his 21st and 22nd home runs of the year to lead the Chicago White Sox over the Oakland A's 11-7. Area TV station to telecast Big 5 By JACK CHEVALIER Sports editor PHILADELPHIA A Wilmington-based television station that's not yet on the air has signed an agreement to broadcast 75 Big Five college basketball games over the next five years. WBOT-TV (Channel 61) will spend $2 million on the project during the life of the contract, station president Dan Slape said Thursday. "We hope to be on the air by mid-November," Slape said at a news conference.

"We certainly will be on before the first basketball game Dec. 2." Channel 61 will be a full-power UHF station with broadcast studios in Wilmington and a transmitter in South Harrison, N.J., near Swedesboro. Slape said the signal would reach 50 miles in all directions, with Dover just inside the southern boundary. The Big Five series will begin with Penn vs. Southern Cal from the Palestra on Dec.

2. The second game will be Penn at Delaware on Saturday, Dec. 7. That will be the Blue Hens' only appearance on the 15-game schedule for the coming season. Slape said Channel 61 was working hard to line up attractive programming in order to win spots on the many different cable-TV systems in the Delaware Valley.

No agreements with any cable systems have been completed yet, Slape said. "Our chances of getting on Rollins are pretty good," Slape said. "I would think Rollins would want a home-town station." WBOT will present five minutes of local news at 5:55 and 10:55 p.m., he said. Movies and syndicated programs will fill up most of the station's air time, Slape said. WBOT viewers who don't have cable-TV will be able to get Channel 61 on the UHF selector.

The "Big Five" is a misnomer because only Penn, St. Joseph's and La Salle will appear on WBOT. Vil-lanova, the NCAA champion, and Temple have signed separate contracts with Philadelphia's Channel 57. No City Series games are included, either. The annual contests among Big Five rivals are shown on PRISM.

Channel 61's $2 million breaks down to $400,000 per season or $26,667 per game. That money includes production, promotion and rights fees, said Slade, who declined to elaborate any further. Dan Baker, executive secretary of the Big Five, said WBOT would broadcast 20 commercials for every Palestra basketball date as part of the package. The production costs will be high, Baker said, because eight of this season's 15 games are scheduled away from Philadelphia. Baker did not announce how much Penn, La Salle and St.

Joseph's would get for rights fees but said it would be "significant." Baker and Bob Vetrone will be the announcers. Boston 000 020 020- 4 Toronto 000 100 000- I Game Winning RBI Greenwefl (2).
