When I was 7 or 8 years old, I watched my mother carding and spinning and, when I herded sheep, I took Jthe materials and the wool with me and practiced until I learned to do it." By the age of 12, Sunrise was weaving her own hand-worked yarn on a loom her father made for her.

"It was a disciplining process," she says of that self-education. "It taught me patience, balance, harmony, control taught me to be creative." As a girl, she began by repeating, in simple form, the colors and designs she saw in her mother's work, including the pattern of large, compressed diamonds running edge-to-edge across the width of a rug a pattern she still sometimes uses. Sunrise grew up in an area of the Navajo Reservation where traditional weavers held to no hallmark regional style like those that had developed elsewhere in this Indian homeland. Sunrise's weavings instead evoke a variety of Navajo approaches and the current "Native American Artists" show features her in Spring Traditional Navajo weavings by PEARL SUNRISE are included in "Native American Artists," an exhibition of painting, sculpture, mixed-media, ceramic and fiber art by a dozen New Mexico Indian artists. The exhibition continues through May 1 1-at the South Broadway Cultural Center, 1025 Broadway SE.

Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Along with Sunrise's tapestries, this show includes a range of traditional and contemporary art by Elizabeth Abeyta, April Earnst, Clifford Fragua, Laura Fragua, Jerry Ingram, Alvin Marshall, Michael McCabe, Robert Montoya, Michael Naranjo, Andrew Pete and Austin Real Rider.
