'QC WITH ATTACHMENTS Ratings Figures In on City Radio By WILL HOFFMAN Journal TV Editor While the latest ratings for Albuquerque radio stations are being released, major changes are underway at KOB AM and FM. Preliminary Arbritron figures show few major changes in the standings. The Top 5 stations are: 1. KKJY, 2.

KWXL, 3. KOB-AM, 4. KFMG and 5. KRST. Meanwhile, KOB-FM on Monday switched from automated programming to live, more contemporary music and KOB-AM in the past two weeks changed its newscasts.

Ron Sack, KOB radio general manager, said the changes had been planned apartfrom any ratings results. He stressed that the ratings figures are basic "boxcar-share results" from the metropolitan area for the listening audience over age 12. The rating period was March 19 to June 10. This was the first semi-annual extended ratings sweeps ever done. The Top 16 stations, their program formats, most recent rating and rating in 1980 were: 1.

KKJY, background music, 11.9, 15.2; 2. KWXL, heavy rock, 9.5, 5.7; 3. KOB-AM, adult contemporary, 9.2, 8.8; 4. KFMG, album rock, 8.0, 9.7; 5. KRST, country, 7.5, 5.6; 6.

KZZX, adult contemporary, 7.5, 5.6; 7. KABQ, Hispanic, 5.4, 6.1; 8. KQEO, oldies, 5.1, 6.5; Also, 9. KRZY, country, 4.7, 4.8 10. KZIA, talk, 4.2, 4.1; 11.

KAMX, rock, 3.5, 3.4; 12. KOB-FM, adult contemporary, 3.8, 2.9; 13. KRKE, country, 2.5, 2.3; 14. KHFM, classical, 2.2, 4.3; 15. KKIM, religious, 1.5, 1.6; and 16.

KDRM, background music, .8, .5 The remaining five stations, said Sack, were mostly noncommercial or religious with shares too small to measure. Two applications were filed recently for new radio stations in Albuquerque. One was granted. Applicants are Mid New Mexico Broadcasters, for a middle-of-the-road music operation in Rio Rancho, and WiskesAbaris Communications Broadcast Group of Chicago, for a commercial FM station. Spanish Community Radio was given a license to operate a station at 1240 AM.

In major expansion, KOB-FM recently added six people, three new studios and new equipment in order to reach a wider audience. Previously, the station had a stress on less contamporary, more background music. KOB AM made changes in its morning, noon and afternoon news. Frank Haley and Maggie McDougall now co-anchor the 15-minute news at 6, 7 and 8 a.m. At noon the news has been cut from 30 to 15 minutes.

In the afternoon, the 4 and 5 p.m. newscasts have been cut from 15 to 10 minutes, and 10-minute updates have been added at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Assessing the latest ratings, Sack said KWXL and KRST "did very well," while KOB made modest gains. He said KKJY "is down, but probably not in accumulative audience," and that KQEO may be slipping after making recent ratings gains with its oldies format. Sack attributed KOB-AM's decline in the overall ratings since 1977 to a more competitive FM situaton when FM stations were allowed to broadcast from Sandia Crest.

He also noted a general increase in FM listeners, a nationwide trend. Overall, he said, there are more country music stations in Albuquerque gaining a greater share of the audience. He noted more diversity in radio programming in recent years, away from the extremes of rock and background music and toward more adult contemporary music. Dave Lyons, KOB-FM general manager, said his station is aiming at the broad segment of the community with a good lifestyle, professionals." "It's our commitment to excellence with real "I think we're going to create our own audience," said Steve Hatley, KOB-FM program director. "No one is doing what we're doing adult contemporary programming on FM radio." "It's concept radio the very best we can find from every (music) category." "This station didn't exist yesterday (Monday)," said Hatley.

Two years ago, KOB-FM dropped its background music format for transitional programming which was more upbeat and contemporary. Now the station has a mix of music. mmmr i-i-i --'J 1 Mr I TjjjMjTIl ffiwh III lap M'M'm mfi MTioll I WFommerelal IjSL Hi Mr 1 Heavy Duty 1 lh?
