K6 Sunday News Journal, Wilmington, Ftb. 22, 1987 teafles for sale on compact disc mono format the Beatles are in the room with you. On the LP, they're iust on vinvl. John Lennon is so Mill, f) La pJpjOS fi A MaaaBHBaaBHaBajBBalaaBaaaajaaHaaaaB pit Four compact discs of Beatles first four Thursday, followed by three more "Help," "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" in April, and "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club" in June. All of the Beatles' CDs will be issued in the original British editions with the first-edition art work, song sequences and titles.

For example, "Please Please Me," the first Beatles' LP, appeared in England on March 22, 1963. Later that year, Vee Jay Records retitled it and released it in America as, "Introducing the Beatles." In 1965, after Capitol obtained the stateside rights to the Beatles' records, the LP was re-released in a shortened form as "The Early Beatles." Pep rtotos 3 veteran rock acts disappoint Compiled from wire lenfcet Bob Seger was right Rock roll never forgets. But we'd all be a bit better off if it had an occasional memory lapse. The success of veteran rockers, from the Grammy nominations of Paul Simon and Steve Winwood to the comeback of the Moody Blues, has inspired other old-timers. The results are, to say the least, mixed.

San tana, "Freedom" (Colombia): It's been 20 years since Carlos San-tana formed the salsa-blues band that bears his name. In that time he's made some great records and some terrible ones. "Freedom" is mostly the latter. The material is generic soul-funk-jazz fusion, with little of the Latin influence that colors his best work. Still, the album comes alive whenever Santana unleashes his soaring guitar solos.

For nostalgia buffs, the album includes reunions with veteran drummer Buddy Miles, with whom Santana made a live album in 1972, and original Santana member Gregg Rolie, who left the band to form Journey. "Freedom" was the perfect opportunity for Santana to take advantage of rock's return to its roots. But instead of fiery Latin-blues, the album is just bland commercial fusion. The Gregg Allman Band, "I'm No Angel" (Epic): After success with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Epic Records saw there was still a market for blues-rock, so they signed the former Allman Brother to his first record deal in six years. But the Georgia singer-keyboardist is inf uriatingly erratic.

His singing here ranges from an emotional rasp to an unmusical croak. Guitarist Dan Toler almost saves the album with his fine, bluesy guitar work, and Allman's Hammond B-3 organ remains one of rock's most soulful sounds, but "I'm No Angel" is only as good as its songs, which are not good enough. The two best tunes are a hot instrumental cover of Spencer Davis' "Don't Want You No More" and Allman's own "It's Not My Cross to Bear." But both have been Allman standards for almost 20 years. Unless Allman is satisfied leading an Allman Brothers clone band, he'll have to do better. Deep Purple, "The House of Blue Light" (Mercury): A great argument that heavy metal is best left to the young.

Featuring Ian Paice, one of rock's all-time worst drummers, this quintet sounds like a road company of "Spinal Tap." Ritchie Blackmore occasionally plays a guitar lick that isn't a cliche, and Ian Gillan lets out a pleasingly leathery shriek now and then, but not often enough. Worse than old rocker who can't cut it anymore are rookies who think they can handle old styles: Bruce Willis, "The Return of Bruno" (Motown): In the year's most cynical LP, the "Moonlighting" star does a bad Huey Lewis imitation for 10 tunes worth of limp bar-band boogie and soulless rhythm-and-blues. New Edition, "Blue Moon" By CLIFF RADEL Gannett Newi Service Beatlemania returns Thursday. That's the day Capitol Records releases the Fab Four's first four compact discs, "Please Please Me," "With the Beatles," "A Hard Day's Night" and "Beatles for Sale." This simple act of putting four CDs on sale has become an event Bert Ottaviano of Bert's Tape Factory, 2501 Concord Pike, says he expects demand for the classic recordings to exceed the rush for digital versions of Bruce Springsteen's history-making live record. He says requests have had his phones ringing off the hook for the past several days.

Mark Fruchtman of Jeremiah's Compact Disc, 246 Philadelphia Pike, says he expects to have at least 75 copies of each title in the store by Thursday, and more should arrive by the weekend. Classics Delaware, 816 Market St Mall, also plans to carry the recordings. Prices for the CDs vary from about 55 for the set of four, or from $14.99 to $17.99 for single copies. The Beatles' CDs have been on hold for years. Legal battles between the record company and the surviving members Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison and the estate of John Lennon caused the delay.

Now that those problems have been solved, Capitol can go ahead and digitalize the Beatles. Plans call for releasing the band's entire catalog in chronological order throughout 1987, starting with the MCA Dual Action Exercise Bike Pedal and row separately or simultaneously. jigs orlg. "A Hard Day's The CD contains the best of the American LPs "A Hard Day's Night" and "Something New." Clearly the best and the brightest of the four CDs, this 1964 recording documents the Beatles' rapid maturation as composers and singers with astounding fidelity. When Lennon and McCartney harmonize, their individual voices are heard with the utmost clarity. On "And I Love Her," fingers glide over guitar strings with a you-are-there sound. "Beatles for Marketed in America as the "Beatles '65" and "Beatles VI" LPs, "Beatles for Sale" is no sellout Whether you're listening to a worn-out record or a slick CD (where the drums are too muffled), there's no mistaking what moved John Lennon as he ripped into "Rock and Roll His inspiration was the timeless emotion they call passion.

Against mechanical-sounding backup and in voices wispier than the Frederick's of Hollywood catalog, New Edition criminally assaults classic doo-wop and Finally, there are old-timers whose comebacks are more than welcome: Peter, Paul Mary, "No Easy Walk to Freedom" (Gold Castle): Although this trio has been performing regularly since reuniting in 1978, this is their first album in six years. It coincides with the 25th anniversary of their debut. Twenty-five years later, the essence of remains the same: political songs, love songs, a childhood song and vocal bar-monies. The harmonies may not sound as good as in the 1960s (Mary Travers' voice has grown deeper), but the lyrics hit home and the. melodies are likable and occasionally catchy.

The title song, co-written by Peter Yarrow and Margery Taban-kin, could become a contemporary standard. One of those all-purpose protest songs like those sang in the '60s, "No Easy Walk to Freedom" links the causes of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. They also express their views emphatically on Yarrow's "Light One Candle," a typically broadside about Jewish dissidents in the Soviet Union, and Noel (Paul) Stookey's Latin-tinged solo effort "El Salvador." Those are the standout selections. But "Right Field," a playful children's tune about the insignificant role of a right fielder in baseball, should not be overlooked; it's insightful and delightful. sidos A new Fleetwood Mac LP is due out by the end of March.

Prince should be releasing a new double-album around the same time. No one knows what to expect. The next few months will also see a new Bee Gees album hitting the stores. If it's a hit, it'll be the fourth comeback for the Brothers Gibb. Phil Collins will rest up during an April break in the Genesis tour by going on the road for a few weeks as Eric Clapton's drummer.

The logistics may resound with confusion, but the CDs sound great By and large, Capitol has done a superb job digitally remastering the tapes from the Beatles' carefree early days. One quibble: The CDs scrimp on historical notes and recording data. But don't let that spoil the music. So, as Ed Sullivan would say, "here they are, right here on our shew, the Beatles on CD." "Please Please Paul McCartney counts off the first song. The Beatles leap into "I Saw Her Standing There." Suddenly, it's 1963.
