.7 Supplement to The Nw Journal Popart, Octobar 28, 1978 mm back at Allen, who Is currently' unemployed himself, but he has a chance this week to at' least get back at the Redskins. Both teams are struggling. Despite a good draft, the acquisition of O.J. Simpson and a rash of other trades, the 49ers have hit rocks instead of gold with a 1-7 mark. The Red-, skins, after a 6-0 start, have lost' their last two games.

Worse yet, their offense has developed blind spots. They have scored only three touchdowns offensively in their last four games. In the last two, they've had the ball inside the opposition's 35-yard line for 57 plays and gotten only one touchdown and three field goals. When the 49ers have the ball San Francisco has shown the rare ability to self-destruct. The 49ers have had an incredible 30 turnovers so far, 16 of them interceptions from second-year quarterback Steve -DeBerg.

With the 49ers, Simpson is averaging less than 3.8 yards per carry and hasn't had a run! longer than 20 yards. Watch for the 49ers to run at the left side fT If I 49crs vs. Redskins Sunday 1 p.m. (0 A year ago', when Pete McCulley was an assistant on the Redskins staff, new San Francisco Ceneral Manager Joe Thomas put in a spring-time call to George Allen. "We'd like to have McCulley as our head coach," said Thomas, who had just moved in as the 49ers' mastermind.

"That'll cost you a No. 1 draft choice," said Allen. Click went the phone. End of conversation. Thomas tapped Ken Meyer instead as sort of an interim man and the 49ers struggled home 5-9.

As soon as the season was over, Thomas dropped Meyer and grabbed McCulley, who was then free of his Redskins contractural obligations. Well, McCulley can't get, of the Redskins' defense, where veteran defensive end Ron McDole has slowed a step at age 39 and erratic corner-back Gerard Williams subs for all-pro lemar Parrish, who is out for the season with a fractured forearm. When the Redskins have the ball Fullback John Rig-gins, who leads the club in both rushing and receiving, is off to the best start of his career. Riggins' 673 yards rushing is tops among NFC fullbacks, and he gets a good portion of it on his own. The Redskins have a problem at the halfback spot where Mike Thomas continues to be nagged by a crack-sprain in his foot and hasn't played in two weeks.

For replacements, the Redskins use a shuttle system among Clarence Harmon, who was a fullback last year; rookie Tony Green, who has breakaway speed but fumbles, and ex-Miami Dolphin Benny Malone, who joined the club two weeks ago with an ankle sprain but is ready to play now. KEY MATCHUPS 49ers defensive end Ced-rick Hardman vs. offensive tackle Terry Hermeling Hardman, now in his ninth year, is still one of the game's great pass rushers, although 49ers rarely get many sacks any more. Hermeling did a job on Harvey Martin of Dallas three weeks ago, but has slumped since. Now he is bothered with a knee sprain that cuts his mobility.

If Hardman can overpower Hermeling, the Redskins will have to keep Riggins in the backfield as an extra blocker, which will weaken their passing offense by eliminating the safety-valve receiver. Ever since the Cowboys picked on Williams in two games last season for bombs, the Redskins' secondary was suspect. Pardee thought he had the problem solved with the trade for Parrish. 49ers running back O.J. Simpson vs. middle linebacker Harold McClinton The Redskins like to have 290-pound Dave Butz take two blockers on, head-on, thus freeing McLinton to fill the holes. McLinton is solid with room to move. However, he plays about five yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

When he's screened, a back like Simpson has a chance to read the play and cut back for a sizable gain. SORANTINO LEASING Lease A new '79 CADILLAC OLDSMOBILE Now. Many Different Plans to suit your needs. Call or See FRED DE JOHN at 454 N. Broadway, Penmvillt, N.J.

The Saints reached mid-season with a .500 record for the first time in their existence by doing what no other Saints team has ever done, defeating the Rams in Los Angeles, Ubing an improving defense to win a street fight, 10-3, handing the Rams their first loss of the year. In temperament and talent, the two teams have a lot in common. Neither is blessed with an abundance of premium players; both have lost top players to injury; both have acquired their head coach's tenacity as fighters. The formula has worked well for both clubs.

While the offenses have struggled with injuries, the defenses have steadily progressed. Last week the Saints turned the Rams back 10 times on third down, blocked a field goal and sacked Pat Haden five times. The (Duo Giants, passing just 10 times on offense, literally throttled the Redskins in the second half. Saints Sunday 2 p.m. CD The question before the New Orleans Saints and the New York Giants is this: Can they win the little ones? In a year when the meek have inherited playoff contention in the NFL, the downtrodden Saints and Giants have scratched and clawed their way to surprising records by toppling a pair of the power teams. The Giants reached 5-3 their best start since 1970 by winning their annual bloodbath with the Washington Redskins,.
