ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Friday, February 4, 1994 A7 'I Think He Was Going To ICill Suspect's Wife Says was trying to find out where Trena was," Shirley Lyon said. "We feel somewhat relieved but none of this will bring back the Francia boy," she added. Frank Lyon said FBI agents told him the camper Richardson was driving broke down at the turnoff to the Lyons' ranch. Richardson left the spear, which was made of a pipe and butcher knife, in the truck and started running the five miles to the ranch, he said. Search dogs lost Richardson's scent but the helicopter soon spotted him.

Law enforcement agents then closed in and Richardson gave him self up, Lyon said. Richardson had been on the run since Jan. 23, when Shirley Lyon dropped him off outside Winslow. Unbeknownst to Richardson, she had reported his confession about the Francia slaying to police earlier that day. She speculated Thursday that Richardson had not been able to get far because of a lack of money and that he came back because he knew Trena would receive a disability check the first of the month.

She said she believed Richardson "intended to take her (Trena) by force and go hide out in the woods in that camper." Even though her husband is behind bars, Trena Richardson said she still fears for her life. She said she believes Richardson will seek revenge through gang members of the Aryan Brotherhood. Richardson claimed he belonged to the White supremacy group while in Arizona prisons. "All it would take is a letter from him," she said. "And I would be history." Richardson had been released in December from the Florence, state prison after being imprisoned nearly five years for burglary.

He was passing through Albuquerque when Francia disappeared, the FBI said. Meanwhile, a trust fund has been set up for Jonathan Francia. Jonathan's father, Larry, said that his fellow Bernalillo County employees created the fund to help the family if they need to fly to Arizona. Francia said anyone interested in contributing could make a donation at any Sunwest Bank in New Mexico. The fund is called the Jonathan Francia fund.

Francia said the money would be used to benefit his son in some way. "When Jonathan does come home, it will be all for him," he said. "But, if the DNA turns up positive (and identifies the burned body in the trunk as the boy's), it will be used to bring Jon back to New Mexico." Richardson would waive all hearings and agree to be returned to Albuquerque. He is expected to appear before a federal judge next week in Albuquerque. An investigator with the Navajo County Attorney's Office said his office is reviewing the case for possible murder charges against Richardson in connection with the Francia case.

The FBI said Richardson allegedly stole a green pickup on day morning in Winslow. Somebody spotted him and reported it to police. Trena Richardson and her mother, Shirley Lyon, were also in Winslow. A deputy sheriff saw them and told them they were needed for questioning. "Now we know it was to keep us safe," Shirley Lyon said.

At about 4:30 p.m. after Richardson had been arrested police allowed the women to pick up Trena's three children from daycare. The day-care center director told them Richardson had come in before noon asking for Trena. The center director said Richardson did not ask for the children. The center director called police immediately after Richardson left.

"He didn't want the babies. He CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1 a said they found Richardson hiding under his neighbor's porch. No one was home at that house. Richardson was in jail Thursday in (Flagstaff after being formally charged in federal magistrate court w(th kidnapping and carjacking in connection with the Jan. 12 disappearance of 16-year-old Jonathan Fcancia.

Richardson, his usual light hair arjd mustache dyed black, told Magistrate Stephen Vercamp he understood the charges read to him. told Richardson: "I strongly suspect there will be additional charges." pit Jan. 13, the torched 1978 Camaro that Francia had been driving' was found on the Navajo Reservation north of Winslow with body tentatively identified as Ftancia in the trunk. Richardson told the Lyons he and another man stabbed Francia near the ranch after kidnapping him ftora a restaurant in Albuquerque. They then burned the car and body.

'Vercamp said the kidnapping charge could carry a life sentence and the carjacking could carry 10 years.
