B-11 Sunday News Journal, Wilmington, November 19, 1978 Aqueduct 'Canyon' wins Colonial. Cup Hofse racing Delpy Spectacular Bid to spend winter in Fla. the first two horses. Neither claim was upheld. The winner, a daughter of Quack owned by Mrs.

Roger Lau-rin, trained by her husband and ridden by Reuben Hernandez, ran the 1 1-8 miles over a sloppy track in the stakes record time of 1:50 and paid $11.20, $5.40 and $4.40. LAUREL, Md. (AP) Silent Cal drew off in midstretch for a two-length victory over Star de Naskra in the $44,250 Japan Racing Association Handicap at Laurel RaceCourse. The 3-year-old colt, who carried 115 pounds, came between horses rounding the turn under jockey Doug Thomas, shaking off pacesetter Silent Joy at the head of the stretch and topweight Star de Naskara at 122 pounds through the lane to complete the mile in 1:37 2-5. Keystone second-place horse, who earned $30,000, was ridden by Richard McWade.

Mrs. Valentine is from Unionville, Pa. Cafe Prince, ridden by Jerry Fishback, earned $10,000 for third place. Fishback went down in a two-horse spill in the first race of the afternoon, but was able to ride Prince in the featured Colonial Cup, the fourth race. About 15,000 spectators were on hand for the five-race, non-betting card.

NEW YORK (AP) Plankton found a hole along the rail at the head of the stretch and went on to win the $80,775 Demoiselle Stakes for 2-year-old fillies by a neck over "the first closing Distinct Honor at Aqueduct. Before the result became official, the crowd of 22,051 had to sit out a double claim of foul against Dover Downs starts he was the odds-on favorite When jockeys Jerry Fishback and Tom Skiffington went to work yesterday, closing day of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association season in Camden, S.C, they were dead-heated for the year's riding championship The Maryland Racing Commission again has rejected Timonium's request to conduct Sunday racing in '79. Fair Hill officials, after studying the calendar, have decided on a five-day schedule in 1979. The Cecil County course will conduct three pari-mutuel programs in the spring (Saturday, May 12; Memorial Day, Monday, May 28; Saturday, June 2) and two in the fall Saturday, Sept. 15 and Saturday, Sept.

22) The Maryland Racing Commission approved the "split meeting" schedule for the May dates, leaving Saturday, Mav 19, orten to avoid conflict with the Preakness. Any doubts horse players also are horse fans should have been erased last weekend. Neither Seattle Slew nor Spectacular Bid was an attractive betting proposition both went off at l-to-10 but their presence at Aqueduct and Keystone, respectively, had an obvious impact on the box-office totals at both tracks. Aqueduct, featuring Slew in his farewell appearance, reported an attendance increase of more than 15 percent over the prior Saturday. Spectacular Bid, in Pennsylvania to pick up a fat purse in the Heritage Stakes, produced a similar bonanza for Keystone's management.

Spectacular Bid's spectacular performances, incidentally, have induced trainer Buddy Delp to desert Maryland for the winter. Delp is convinced his colt will be the top 3 year-old of 1979 and intends to waste no time proving it. The horse, the horseman and 25 lesser runners coached by Delp will ship to Gulf-stream Park next month, where Spectacular bid's primary objective will be the Florida Derby. No matter what happens during the final six weeks of the racing year, local trainer Gene Weymouth is assured of his finest 12 months. At last count, Weymouth had saddled 29 winners, many of them at long odds, compared to 1977 when his pupils could get the job done in only 12 races.

(AP) New Zealand's Grand Canyon, leading all the way, won the coveted Colonial Cup steeplechase yester-dayby two lengths over America's Deux Coup.

The victory in the 2-mile, 6-furlong race over 17 fences was worth $60,000 to Canyon's owner, D.W. Samuel. The 8-year-old grey gelding was ridden by English jockey Ron Barry. Cafe Prince, owned by Augustin Stables, finished third. The time for the race over the spacious Springdale Race Course was 5:10 2-5.

At one point, Grand-Canyon was six lengths ahead, but, after the eighth fence, the lead began to narrow as Deux Coup and Cafe Prince rallied. The two American horses finished almost neck-and-neck, with Mrs. Miles Valentine's Deux Coup leading by a head. The three-year-old filly covered the mile in 1:39 15 on an off track. To further add insult to injury, Mr.

Bodley quotes the Phillie Phanatic as calling Dr. Blackin-ton, an Allowing the Phillie Phanatic, whose only visible assets are a furry coat and a pneumatic tongue to refer to a professor of Dr. Blackinton's calibre in such a manner is not only an insult to the band, but also to the entire University. In the future, I feel that it would be greatly appreciated if Mr. Bodley would not burden us with his obviously limited musical expertise and stick to writing about areas in which he is not quite as ignorant.

Jeffrey J. Jones Newark Band'!) pride is hurt Dear Editor, Having been a member of the University of Delaware Marching Band for four years, I became very upset by the article on the Phillie Phanatic in the Sunday News-Journal. After reading your column in Wednesday's Evening Journal which finally presented the other side of the story, I finally realized what it was that had gotten me so upset my pride. For four years I was proud to go out on Saturday afternoons to put all I had into my performance, without getting anything in return except self-satisfaction and maybe a standing ovation from the crowd. (By the way, there was a standing ovation for the band last Saturday).

Very few people realized what had gone into that one performance, they only saw the finished product. They did not see the split lips, the sore shoulders, and blistered feet the day after Labor Day when we returned from Band Camp. They did not know when we made a last minute change in one of our routines on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning: This is a band made up of members who have a love for music and marching. Oh, yes they1 do get one credit for it, but tl -y average 9 hours a week in I band without including Baid Camp. This means that spend as much time in this course as three of their three credit courses.

Not many people do it for the credit! I hope Dr. Blackinton takes your suggestion to have the Phanatic perform with the band, should Delaware make it to the playoffs. I also hope that you would attend a practice of the band to see just what goes into their performance. They start practice at 4 p.m. at the practice field behind Amy DuPont Music Building.

Maybe then you can appreciate their performance at halftime. They may only number around 50 members, but they have a lot of pride in their team, their school, and their band. The same kind of pride that I have along with the members of the University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens Marching Band. If you pay close attention you will see it. Frank Ferriola Jr.

Newark Newark 'flipped' out Dear Editor, I have just read a small article on page 46 in the Wednesday (Nov. 15) edition of the Evening Journal. Well, if you are not familiar with this article let me fill you in. This article tells us of how William Penn High beat Newark fair and square; no not in football but, get this, in coin tossing. Yes a coin toss decided that William Penn represent Flight A in the state tournament.

Well to me, a student at Newark High, that doesn't sound like a fair way to decide who is the champion. How does it sound to you? Not so fair, huh? I can't blame William Penn for accepting the championship, but I hope they don't like the way they won it. If it was my decision to make, this is the way I would do it. The first thing I would do, actually the only thing I could do, would be to make up the game between Newark and William Penn. This would give the Flight A champions practice, which I am sure they both need.

Doesn't this sound like a better solution? Maybe I am wrong? Maybe a coin toss is a fair way to decide a champion, but answer me this, why don't the Major Leagues flip a coin to decide a victor when a game is tied after 9 innings? Please tell me the reason we don't use a coin toss to decide the New Castle County teachers' strike. Why don't we just flip a coin, if it is heads the teachers get what they want; if it is tails the teachers get nothing. Which is exactly what Newark got, nothing. I would appreciate it if you would print this article so maybe someone important will read it, and in the next teachers' strike, when the football season ends the same way it did this time, a fair solution will prevail. William A Eckroade Newark Stick to gportswriting Dear Sir, It was with great disappointment and indignation that I read Hal Bodley's article "Phanatic fan steals show at in the November 12th issue.

Mr. Bodley took it upon himself to refer to the University of Delaware band as performing half-time shows which are "forgettable" and "will never make it to The implied justification by Mr. Bodley for making these comments was the unfavorable reaction of the Delaware band director, Dr. Blackin-ton, to an unscheduled performance of the Phillie Phanatic with the band's halftime show. It is extremely unfortunate that Mr.

Bodley chose to enlighten the sports page with his obviously limited and prejudiced opinions. It is ironic that he could watch the mediocre performance of a typical college band (Villanova) and then fail to appreciate the difference of the following Delaware band performance. I feel that Mr. Bodley is tremendously unap- Oil eV e. Mut i' a-i'i.
