Wrong, doc. "ER" stands for It was designed to get attention and it did just that.

It began Monday with the herniated vocals of singer Michael Bolton being cut off and an announcer stating "less music and more sound effects." Then came the non-stop barrage of breaking glass, barking dogs, flushing toilets and bodily emissions. Announcers periodically interrupted with "We'll have a mangled car wreck and a corpse falling through a car door, all ahead on sound effects radio." And there were listener testimonials, like the impassioned sentiment of a woman: "I just love it. You get all the sound effects you don't normally hear during the day." It was a gag, of course, like when a radio station plays Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" for a weelc solid before introducing its new format. In this case, the station is KAMX-FM (107.9), which had played a format of adult contemporary music. But at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, as abruptly as the sound effects appeared, they vanished and were replaced by the station's new alternative rock format. The station's call letters will also be changed to either KTEG or KEDX and it will promote itself as "The Edge," said station general manager Jim Pidcock. KAMX was recently purchased for about $750,000 by Bengal Communications, an Albuquerque-based radio group. Included in that purchase price was-KAMX's sister station, KAMX-AM (1520), which had been simulcasting the FM's programming. The AM's call letters will be changed to KDZZ, and it will air the facilities (you could store the Spruce Goose in that lobby!) the rough-and-tumble "ER" docs can only dream about.

NBC's "ER" and CBS's "Chicago Hope" represent TV's biggest medical breakthrough since NBC's "Dr. Kildare" and ABC's "Ben Casey" virtually invented the genre in 1961, made instant heart-throbs of Richard Chamberlain and Vince Edwards and even inspired a teenybopper hit song Kildare! Dr. Casey! You are wanted for Those two medics co-existed happily, Casey on Monday nights, Kildare on Thursdays. In that more innocent era, the networks weren't so quick to aim similar series at each other and risk neutralizing them both. Such strategy was left to nations with nuclear arsenals.

But this year, CBS fired "Hope" at NBC's "ER." NBC fired back. Instant cliche: "dueling doctors." As everybody knows, "ER" (which also stars George Clooney, Sherry Stringfield, Noah Wyle and Eriq LaSalle) prevailed from the very first round. This gave rise to another instant cliche "CBS blinks!" when the so-called Eye Network quickly moved "Hope" an hour earlier on Thursdays. The next week, "Hope" vaulted from 59th to 31st place. "ER" remained a Top 10 fixture.

The showdown had lasted all of two weeks. Yet the notion persists among TV critics, at least that a blood feud remains to be settled, and that when the dust clears, only one of those two shows should be left standing. It's only sporting that this should be so. Except this isn't jfports, it's drama. Children's Satellite Network, which features programs and music geared to children age 4-14.

That change was expected to be made by the weekend, Pidcock said. The Children's Satellite Network is programmed out of Minneapolis, but KDZZ has hired a local elementary school teacher to develop and market local children's programs, which will be added in early 1995. Earlier this week, Bengal Communications also closed the sale on KKJY-FM (100.3) for about $1.6 million. For years, "K-JOY" had played easy listening music before recently switching to light jazz. It will begin airing a new format of hits from the 1970s, Pidcock said.

New call letters are expected to be chosen by the end of the month. Pidcock, previously the general manager of KKOB-AM and -FM, said the choice of the two formats was made after extensive market research, including a survey of 600 people in the 18-54 age "The research showed that the two formats that were available in Albuquerque, and could attract an audience of sufficent size, -were these two. Nobody's done it (alternative music) here the way we are going to do it. We will concentrate on the hits and avoid the non-hitaon the "Everything's Rosy." Plenty rosy for Anthony Edwards, who plays emergency-room resident Dr. Mark Greene in the NBC hospital drama, "ER" (tonight at 9, KOB-TV, Channel 4).

A guy who served as Tom Cruise's doomed co-pilot in the feature "Top Gun," who had a recurring role as the hyperallergic "Bubble Man" on "Northern Exposure," now, lo and behold, Edwards is slicing and dicing his way to stardom on his hot new doctor series. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done," says the 32-year-old actor "but in a fun way." So what's the hardest part? "Putting on your rubber gloves at same time you're saying your lines." What's the most fun part? "Saying things like 'ventricular tachycardia' and in Babinski reflex: If the patient's toe bends back when you stroke the sole of the foot, that means Jx-nay with the ain-bray." Of course, another big new Chicago-based doctor show set up practice in the same time slot this fall. CBS's "Chicago Hope" stars Adam Arkin and Mandy Patinkin as world-clajs surgeons at a vorld-class medical center whose world-class "What I hear from our writers is, they're so busy just trying to create good drama they're not really concerned with either trying to imitate, or trying to be different from, anything," Edwards replies when the compare-and-contrast question comes up. "The success or failure of either 'Chicago Hope or ER' is based on whether or not people want to watch the characters. And it really doesn't have much to do with where the characters happen to work," he adds.

Nonetheless, critics have struggled to pigeonhole the two series into just about every conceivable set of polarities. Thus is one show labeled "fast," the other one "rich," the other "poor," one "young," the other "old." Well, how about "Democrat" or "Window" or "Paper" or The truth is, "ER" and "Chicago Hope" are both just what the doctor ordered for viewers who like good TV drama. Watching one of these hospital-set series need not preclude watching the other, any more than a viewer must choose one and only one among the police dramas "NYPD Blue," "Law Order" and "Homicide." Which brings us back to the fix the networks still have us in come Thursday night: Who in his or her right mind wants to sit through two hospital dramas however different, however excellent back-to-back? Just try a two-hour stretch of "Hope" and "ER," then see what kind of dreams you have. CBS and NBC continue to do both shows, and their viewers, a disservice.
