ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Friday, November 28, 1986 F29 'Shock' Radio Digs Into Electronic Bag of Fun Rick Nathanson Si often are a bit off-color and which are rewarded with the sound of screaming rats or David Letterman one-liners: "Now that's comedy, ladies and gentlemen." The fun also includes television trivia, in which listeners are asked questions about old television shows, and lyrical pursuits, requiring callers to guess the names of songs. Pardo announces: "It's the time of the morning when we get back at all those people who have done something so utterly stupid and despicable that they deserve to be blown into tiny little pieces. It's time to blow somebody up!" The phone lines light up. Bar- MORE: See 'SHOCK on PAGE 30 over sweater and Chuck Taylor Converse Hi-Top basketball sneakers, Trout arrives at the 94-Rock studios about an hour prior to his 6 a.m. air time.

A yellow marker in hand, he peruses the morning newspaper for out-of-the-ordinary items to satirize. Using the newspaper items, he eases into his morning show. Suddenly, the voice of NBC Network announcer Don Pardo, of Saturday Night Live fame, blares from the studio speakers: "Give T.J. some 'good phone' and win some really neat stuff." As a member of the NBC Radio Network, KZRR announcers can send Pardo written transcripts of bits, to which he puts his voice and returns the recorded messages. Following Pardo's announcement, Trout (that's his real name) makes his pitch: "The first person who can do a good Curly from the Three Stooges will win a free all-day skiing pass at Wolf Creek," he offers.

It's still dark outside, but the phone lines are active. A decent Curly finally echoes through the room: "Nyukl Nyuk! Nyuk! Woo! Woo! Woo!" More Trout: "It's Friday! Let's have some dancing music!" Weird Al Yankovic breaks into an accordion and voice medley of songs by Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Rolling Stones, Lionel Richie, Bananarama, Janet Jackson and Madonna. Trout's morning bag of electronic fun includes, besides "good phone," asking listeners for jokes, which Around the nation it's known as "blue" or "shock" radio. It assaults its listeners with racial humor, sexual jokes and humor based on tragic personal or current events. The new morning announcer at KZRR-FM, T.J.

Trout, admits to walking the fine line between outrageous and shocking, "but I never cross it. "There have been announcers like that for 10 years," Trout said. "It's really nothing new. The reason Albuquerque hasn't had them is not because listener tastes are different here, but because people who do shock radio have been in the business a long time, their act is polished, and they usually go to larger markets, where the money is. I'm talking six figures." Trout said he finds shock radio "personally distasteful," and added, "I don't see the need to be exploitive and in bad taste.

You can be entertaining in other ways." Nevertheless, Trout's show is different from most, if not a little shocking.
