m. Can be reached Sandia Employes Test Upper Air With Balloons Sandia Corp. employe are Iplaying with balloonj these days, but the helium-filled globes bear little resemblance to children's toys. The Sandia balloons are being used in conducting tests of the upper atmosphere to determine the feasibility of using imilar balloons for upper air measurements before drop tests at Salton Sea, Tohnopah and Yucca Flat. The balloons resemble those released by the Weather Bureau each day.

They rise at the rate of 1800 feet per minute or more. During one test a balloon rose at 1750 feet per minute until it reached 60,000 feet. Then it accelerated to 2700 feet a minute. It burst at 64,000 ieet. Herb Plagge, aupervisor of the meteorology section, said the 10-foot balloons ascend much faster than earlier types.

Those used before required an hour to reach the upper atmosphere. Farm Outlook In Otero 'Good' Journal Special ALAMOGORDO County Agent Walter Wade, who has been conducting a survey over Otero County farms and ranches, says crops and ranges over most of the area look good, and cotton farmers especially should get the best yields in a long time. The agent also noted that hail had not hurt the cotton and said, "There is some insect damage, but pests are being controlled pretty well." Discussing range conditions, Wade said they "generally are in very good shape for this time of year and grass has responded well to recent rains in the county." A large portion of fruit buds was nipped by a late freeze last spring, but what fruit there is shows good quality, according to the county agent. The cherry crop was light and the crop spotty, but the R. D.

Champion orchards north of Tularosa are producing a bumper crop of excellent quality. Wade said the apple harvest, which is just beginning, will last until frost. Fears also are now being harvested in quantity.
