Ritten-band informs me that Roman Polanski could be on his way to prison this weekend. At Polanski's Sept. 19 trial for having had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, Judge Rittenband responded to pleas that the director's services were needed for Dino De Laurenti-is' "Hurricane" film and granted Polanski a three month delay in starting a 90-day psychiatric test at California's Chino Prison for Men, preparatory to his first sentencing.

But, says the judge, "I didn't know then that the picture would be impossible to finish in 90 days. I had been told that 400 employes were waiting for Polanski to work on the film and I believed it. Though I don't want to pre judge the case, it does appear that I may have been innocently deceived." Making reference to the story I filed shortly after the trial, Rittenband adds, "You were correct that the script hadn't even been written in September and that shooting wasn't intended until next January. Having found that out, I have scheduled the new hearing." That hearing, to determine if Polanski shouldn't report to Chino is now set for today and Monday, but, says the judge, "I might well have made my decision by this weekend. Dino De Laurentiis wants to give testimony, but won't be availabale until next Monday, and I don't know whether I will wait to hear him.

It's not right to speculate on the outcome of the hearing, but I do feel that I have very possibly been imposed upon." Richard Brooks can find only one fault with estranged wife Jean Simmons. "She's beautiful, witty, romantic, but she had the bad judgment to marry a writer, and with the exception of composers, writers are the most selfish bastards in the world."
