Stars Doug McClure, Peter Cushing and Caroline Munroe. BAD NEWS BEARS (PG, Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neil team in this poignant comedy about a kids' baseball team.

Salty language. THE BINGO LONG TRAVELING ALL-STARS AND MOTOR KINGS A fun film about a jive black baseball team barnstorming during the Depression. Stars Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor. Tart language. GO FOR IT (PG, A well-photographed documentary highlighting a number of sports.

Plenty of action. THE GUMBALL RALLY (PG, A puerile automobile fantasy that deserves howles of protest from the Environmental Protection Agency. HARRY AND WALTER GO TO NEW YORK (PG, A happy, laugh-filled farce starring James Caan, Elliot Gould and Diane Keaton. LOGAN'S RUN (PG, An appealing science fiction film loaded with gimmicks and glamor. Michael York and Jenny Agutter live in a futuristic city devoted to pleasure.

Winner of the Academy Award for best feature documentary, "Everest" is a staggering adventure film with marvelous scenery. MIDWAY (PG, All-star cast comes in second to authentic war footage in this fact a based account of the turning point in of World War II in the Pacific. Violence. MURDER BY DEATH (PG, One of the funniest movies of the year. Written by Neil Simon with an outstanding all-star cast.

OMEN (PG, A telling tale about devil possession starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Mature subject matter. OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (PG, Clint Eastwood directs ands stars in another shoot-em-up. But this one has moments of intelligence and humor. Violence.

POM-POM GIRLS (R,) Juvenile look at contemporary high school life mimicks "American Graffitti" very poorly. Nudity, profantity. THE SHOOTIST (PG, John Wayne's best film in years and maybe better than "True Grit." A realistic western. Mature. SILENT MOVIE (PG, Outrageously funny Mel Brooks film that really is a silent movie.

Stars Marty Feld-man, Dom DeLuise, Brooks and many others. ST. IVES (PG, A contemporatry mystery crime story that is like so many others today. Stars Charles Bronson. Orr mw (nrtmnwr.

But, before you get there, it's all kind of botched up and a little confusing to follow. The fault lies with the script and the direction.

But, Bronson delivers his standard, and as always, sat- By CHUCK MITTLESTADT ST. IVES, directed by J. Lee Thompson, Hiland Theatre (PG rated, 94 min.) Charles Bronson is one of the most commercially successful stars on the screen today. He's also one of the busiest. While most actors are lucky to get one good solid movie role a year, Bronson so far this season has turned out three and we're only halfway through 1976.

isfactory performance. Others in the cast include Academy Award winners John Houseman and Maximillian Schell, along with Jacqueline Bisset and Harry Guardino. There's no fault with their work. I I I Friday starts I A'jfJaiA FRIDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY I A rt.rilfrWlllW 1 'Lifeguard' Drowns II rary mystery crime story, and it looks and sounds and comes out like thousands of other mystery crime yarns you've seen on both the big and little screen. Bronson plays a newspaperman on leave from his job to write a novel. That's what the film tells us, but we never get to see him at a typewriter. He's too busy acting like a combination of Sam Spade, Mike Hammer, Philip Marlowe, Colombo and a dozen other Hollywood-style private eyes. He's hired as a go-between for two different bunches of bad guys.

Of course, he happens to be on the scene when a couple of bodies are found, is implicated and on and on. Just like we've seen lots of times before. And Rick (Sam Elliot) does have a great tan to set off his athletic build. But lifeguarding at age 32 has its perils: The underage "chicks" in their bikinis, the father who wonders when tutrt-r come out the same: a rough, tough man of action with plenty of macho and little or no monkey business. Had "Lifeguard" been conceived and directed by, say, Michael Ritchie (whose recenf'Smile" explored much more than the mere vacuities of teen beauty contests), it might offer some funny and meaningful in THE EEAD SHAMAN OLD TOWN 400 SAN FELIPE N.W. sights into the world of an aging jock.

Not much happens anywhere, beyond Rick's brief encounter with a former girl friend (Anne Archer).

"Lifeguard's" soggy approach to its subject isn't helped by Elliott whose charisma never matches his tan. Whether he goes straight as a Porsche salesman in the San Fernando Valley or stays on the beach it's hard to care one way or the other in a movie that barely wades into its subject.
