Phone 268-5542 Hours 10:00 to 5.00 Tuesday thru Saturday JUST ARRIVED THE NEW GNOMES, By Wil Huygen, Abrams, $17.50.

By JACK SMITH Los Angeles Times Washington Post Service This is one of those remarkable books which represent an author's almost obsessive dedication to a single subject, and one that might be considered of rather small general interest. "Gnomes," by the Dutch scientist Wil Huygen, is engaging, perhaps because we here in southern California, where they are not known to have derived such erroneous notions about gnomes from those kitschy painted clay statues of them in our gardens. Actually, though the common European woodland gnome does somewhat resemble those manikins, being stocky and ruddy, with a large head and nose, and a bushy beard and eyebrows, and wearing a tall red pointed cap, he is on the average only six inches tall (the female somewhat shorter), and would never be seen stand-ingoutin thesun.beinga creature of the night and twilight. Though Huygen tells, us more than the average person might care to know about the physiology of the gnome, going into such matters as hormonal makeup and sex organs, kidney and bladder systems, the circulation and the senses, this information is lifted above the tedious by Huygen's con-genial style and the many charming illustrations by his friend Rien Poortvliet, the Dutch artist These two men worked together for 20 years to their material, virtually becoming creatures of the twilight themselves in search of their elusive subjects. (Fortunately, while gnomes have their own language, they easily learn other languages quickly.)
