Replay Street Justice 539670 18 49 16 9 37 (Eg) MOVIE: Johnny Dangerously (4) 544477 Acoustics Hamper Chorale Folic Concert Rancho Encantado Subject Of TV Film 'Rio Shannon' REVIEW Rancho Encantado, a well-known ranch and resort in Santa Fe, is the subject of an ABC Saturday-night movie to air Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. on KOAT-TV, Channel 7. "Rio Shannon" is based on a manuscript written by resort owner John T. Egan.

It recounts how his mother and his siblings moved from Cleveland in the mid 1960s to rebuild what had been known as Rancho del Monte, a dilapidated and abandoned ed with encores. "Byker Hill" was a man's folksong for men, while the "Irish Lullaby" had a women's sen- timentality, and the rhythmic irregularities of "Ne Sedi, Djemo" (sung in Macedonian) were a nice rhythmic foil for other works on the program. Bass David Barela brought force to his rendition of the Russian folk- song "Ex Kalinka!" If only he had not been sharp. The tragic charac- -ter was cleverly emphasized by the accompanying a cappella chorus's use of onomatopoeia. The audience in the packed little hall received two encores speeding Negro spiritual, "Good News," and a wistfully lovely little piece.

by Sametz, "Still I have had Singing choice made uway from the concert hall and in the privacy of his mind made for a sense of discomfort in the singers, and a tendency for them to go out of tune. Soprano Jennie Olson brought a nice lyrical sense to the zigzag melodies of the sixth movement, "Now Sleep the Old Ones," despite what seemed to this ear to be ungrateful writing for the voice. It was difficult to understand the quickly-unfolding text based on Native American poetry, Still, Sametz displayed a sensibility for expressive color in his dissonant harmonies. The four folk song arrangements (three by Sametz) closing the program had a lightness often associat guest ranch. Betty Egan, a former Women's Army Corps captain, and daughter of a Cleveland industrialist, was widowed with four children when she moved to the By Margaret M.

Barela JOURNAL CORRESPONDENT Given that Friday's concert of the Desert Chorale at St. Thomas of Canterbury featured guest conductor Steven Sametz in a presentation of the premiere of his "Desert Voices," it was disappointing that overly lively acoustics contributed to a less than inspiring concert. The evening's programming matrix, as indicated by the "Folk Transformations" title, drew from a variety of works exhibiting folk music as the basis for composition by the likes of Josquin des Prez (15th) Philippe Verdelot (16th) and J. S. Bach (17th), in addition to arrangements and a work by Sametz.

Acoustical problems alone are not enough to undermine the success of a choral concert. But there were other factors not carefully weighed into the equation. These seemed to contribute to the evening's letdown. Even though the DC consists of only 20 voices, its sound at a higher volume tended to be much too big for the hall throughout the evening. The resulting distortion of sound created discomfort in the listener, and made the words unclear.

The complex weavings in the briskly paced opening madrigal by Josquin were blurred compared to the following one by Verdelot. Here, the slower pace allowed the singers to listen to and balance each other. The thick five-voice texture floated on a lovely straight tone. J.S. Bach's "Jesu, Meine Freude," had a forced musicality, with its exaggerated dynamics.

Again, the pace was too fast to take in the quickly changing harmonies. Chromatic lines blurred and derailed intonation, and text was unclear. Had closely spaced pulses been less deliberate, more floating, texture would not have become pedestrian. With a less myopic approach to two-note groupings, a sense of the phrase would have restored the sense of direction to the texture. As it was, the heavy main beats made for an exaggerated, self-conscious kind of music-making.

The otherworldly flavor of "Desert Voices" was highly reminiscent of the gesture and sound world of George Crumb, with his sighing and darting gestures, often ominous atmospheres, and exotic use of voice and percussion. A sense of the composer's conviction did not emerge until the last of the seven movements. There, he took advantage of opportunities for text painting. The rhetorical gestures seemed to be more his own, rather than modeled on another composer. It was apparent that Sametz was geared up for the performance.

Everything had an urgency in the moment of performance. But his frequent practice of keeping voices in their upper range as they execute jaggedly zigzag melodies a Relations Hips 11 Brown Rick Nathanson JOURNAL MEDIA WRITER Harms said she agreed to stay at KOAT after being asked by outgoing general manager Wayne God-sey and incoming general manager Mary Lynn Roper to reconsider. Godsey and Roper said they were not anxious to change what they regarded as a winning management team. Roper worked at KOAT as a reporter, anchor and news director from 1977 to 1991. Harms has been with KOAT for about 10 years.

KRBL-FM (98.5), which recently vanished from the air, will resume broadcast in the near future, but from a different location. KRBL Broadcasting sold the station to Jim Leary and Piiion Properties, which also owns Plaza Broadcasting and KNYN-FM in Santa Fe. Sale price was about $650,000, Leary said. KRBL is licensed to Los Alamos. The station will relocate its studios to Santa Fe, acquire new call letters and broadcast a music format other than the "Lazer Top-40" format it had been featuring.
