TV-ENTERTAINMENT Friday, February 20, 1987 Albuquerque Journal Page 11, Section A Some Stations Would Accept Condom Ads Bobby Wolff Rick Nathanson Representatives from other radio stations, including KFMG-FM, KNMQ-FM, KKBR-FM and KLSK-FM, said they have not decided if they will accept the advertising of condoms, but they have not ruled it out. Most said the content of the advertisments would be the crucial factor. Hugh Sarrels, operations director for the Singular beautifully captures the rug-pulling radio show host and expertly sets the stage for two worlds that were bound to collide. Independent television station KNMZ, Channel 2, has expanded its coverage to the Farmington area, where the station's signal can be seen on Channel 50. The Santa Fe-based TV station primarily serves the Santa Fe and Albuquerque metro areas.

The addition of the new translator expands the station's potential audience by 32,000 viewers in Farmington, Aztec and Bloomfield. The tabloid is to news what professional wrestling is to sports. Nevertheless, the audience for both is huge. Now, through the miracle of television, a small production company in California brings us "Tabloid-TV." The syndicated half-hour comedy airs locally Saturdays at 12:30 a.m. on KOB-TV, Channel 4.

The program's publicity director, John Hawkins, said in a recent telephone conversation that in keeping with the spirit of tabloid newspapers, the stories on "Tabloid-TV" are given a sensational approach with disregard for truth, accuracy or ethical journalism. Indeed, a disclaimer that declares as much flashes across the screen during each show. Hawkins swears that one-fifth of the stories are taken directly from tabloid newspapers. I presume that means the veracity of these stories is indisputable. And where do the remainder of the stories come from? Who cares, as long as they're funny.

And they usually are. a Here's a hot item from a recent survey conducted by the National Enquirer, the weekly tabloid for "enquiring minds." Of 150 network TV news viewers polled in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville, only about one-third could recall what the lead story had The announcement by CBS that it will accept advertising for condoms on its television and radio stations brought varied responses from local television and radio officials. The CBS announcement Thursday said that only CBS-owned and operated stations would accept such advertising; the network itself would not. Also, a local NBC affiliate spokesman said Thursday the network will not accept condom advertisements, and ABC said it will air public service announcements indicating that condoms help prevent the spread of AIDS. An informal survey of the local network affiliates and several area radio stations indicates that most would accept condom advertising, but so far none has received any requests from manufacturers or advertising agencies.

"We will accept condom advertising," said Jerry Danziger, general manager of KOB-TV, Channel 4, the local NBC affiliate (affiliates are not required to follow their networks' lead; only NBC-owned stations must adhere to its policy.) "There is a disease factor involved here," Danziger said. "If this thing (AIDS) goes unchecked, this country is in for a major problem. If by advertising condoms we can make people aware that it can help stop the spread of AIDS, then it's the right thing to do, and a responsibility of the station." During a recent corporate meeting with officials of Hubbard Broadcasting, which owns KOB, a decision was made that condom advertising will be accepted at all Hubbard-owned TV and radio stations, Danziger said. "My personal feeling is it should be advertised, if it can be done in a tasteful way," said Max Sklower, general manager of KOAT-TV, Channel 7, the ABC affiliate. The station also will accept public service announcements in which condoms will be mentioned as a way to control the spread of AIDS.

Pulitzer Broadcasting, however, which owns KOAT, is taking a "wait-and-see" attitude, Sklower said. Albuquerque Publishing which prints both the Albuquerque Journal and the Albuquerque Tribune, said "we would accept the advertising." The publishing company, he said, has no policy about it, and he noted that condoms have already appeared in the advertisments of drug stores. An interesting new book on the market is "Talked to Death," which details the life and murder of controversial Denver radio personality Alan Berg. Written by Denver Post reporter Stephen Singular, the book will be released in late March (Beech Tree Books William Morrow and The book deals with such issues as race, religion, prejudice, organized crime, First Amendment rights and regulation of the airwaves. Berg, who was Jewish, was gunned down in the driveway of his home June 18, 1984, the day before he was to have talked about gun control on his morning radio show on KOA-AM.

Members of a neo-Nazi organization, The Order, were charged, indicted, tried and convicted on federal racketeering charges for crimes, some of which were related to Berg's death. No one, however, was ever tried for the murder. Singular met Berg in 1982. The book chronicles Berg's life from his early boyhood and whiz-kid lawyer days in Chicago, to his ascent to one of America's most outspoken talk show hosts. Berg, who frequently challenged and criticized right-wing fundamentalism, liberal causes, the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, once said: "If you challenge people's beliefs, it's like pulling the rug out from under them." "People are getting more sophisticated in their viewing and they are not as naive," Sklower said, adding that critics of condom advertising "haven't been watching the soap operas" and are probably limiting their viewing to religious stations or the Disney Channel.

KGGM-TV, Channel 13, the CBS affiliate, is putting together a focus group of representatives from health, religious and civic organizations to discuss condom advertising, said general manager Paul Thorne. The problem, he said, is that the use of condoms for health reasons is also tied to the use of condoms for birth control, "and for decades that's what condoms were primarily used for." Until the issue is resolved, he said, the station would not accept condom advertising, but would likely accept public service announcements about AIDS prevention. Andrew Hebenstreit, president of New Mexico Broadcasting, which owns KGGM, sitid the proposed advertising "isn't a profit question." If condom advertising is accepted, he said, the station will donate the revenue toward AIDS research. Radio stations KOB-AM and -FM "will not accept paid advertising for condoms," said general manager Art Schreiber. The stations will, however, continue news coverage of the AIDS problem.

Public service announcements are now being written that mention the use of condoms as a deterrent to AIDS, he said. "It's such a critical issue from a health standpoint that I didn't want this to become a monetary decision." It's another matter to choose the minor-suit plays carefully enough to assure' success. South ruffs the second heart carefully with a high trump and leads his trump four to dummy's seven. How should he manage the minor suits? If he leads a diamond to his king, the finesse wins but the game loses.

He can use dummy's last trump entry for one club finesse, but there is no way to take a second. South then loses one heart, one diamond and two clubs. So the answer is to lead the clubs before the diamonds. Which club should be led from dummy at trick four? The 10 won't work. The 10 goes to West's queen, and South ruffs another heart high and returns to dummy with the trump nine.

Now he can take a winning club finesse to his jack but he can never enjoy a diamond lead from dummy. Two diamond tricks go to the defense for one down. The winning play is for declarer to lead a low club to his jack at trick four. Later, when the second club finesse wins, the lead remains in dummy for a diamond play and the defenders get only three tricks. BID WITH THE ACES been on the previous night.
