BECKLEY POST-HERALD, BECKLEY, W. FRIDAY MORNING, APRHJ 5,1946 SEVEN i Hunger Does Odd Things, Says Prisoner Of Nazis (EDITORS NOTE: H. And Godfrey Press staff writer, was a prisoner of war under the Germans for three years, and for a considerable part of that time he had to subsist on a diet of about 1,000 calories, slightly under the 1,275 announced for the American zone in Germany, and around the level prevalent in a large part of Europe today. Anderson tells here what this diet does to mind and body.) By GODFREY H. P.

ANDERSON FRANKFURT, April 4'--(AP) People you liked you begin to hate; the ones you hate, you would like to kill. That is one of the results of an insufficient diet. Hunger does odd things to you. I know. During my three and a half years as a prisoner of war, first in Italy, and then in Germany, I often lived on considerably less than the 1,275 calories to which the Germans have been cut.

When the food'parcels from the Red Cross failed to reach us for months on end through bombing and transport difficulties, we had to subsist on the German non- workers ration. And non-workers in Germany did not get much. The German civilian's daily 200 grams of bread still is 80 more than we had then, but otherwise his diet has the same monotony we knew so well. You eat up your potatoes, your sauerkraut, your scrap of bread, maybe cheese. You get up from the table satis- ned.

Half an hour later you are hungrier than before. You think of food all day and at-night you dream about food. But you always wake up before it to the point "of dreaming that" you are full. The less food you have, the more it--meals, that you have had and'those hope to have again. Tempers get short and nerves fray to the breaking point.

You feel a general lassitude and even the smallest task seems to require superhuman effort. Climbing stairs leaves you trembling in the knees and short of breath. You sometimes get -stomach and leg cramps in the night and your mucles knot in knife-harp spasms. Your hunger becomes a dull ache, all day and night. I have seen dignified British generals lining up for potato skins at the kitchen to stem their hunger after meals.
