State University's basketball program and said he supports the efforts of the school's new leaders to place renewed emphasis on academics. Golenbock said that head basketball coach Jim Vslvano could probably stay at N.C. State forever, especially since Brace R.

Poulton resigned as chancellor amid the controversy and Valvano relinquished his position as athletic director. "(ValvanO) is a symbol of what goes wrong when athletic programs run rampant in the university," Golenbock said Monday at a news conference in Raleigh, N.C. "I find it odd that neither of them admit doing anything improper." The NCAA investigation found evidence of players selling shoes and complimentary tickets as well as violations by athletics boosters concerning lodging and meals. Valvano, in an interview after the news conference, said he accepts full responsibility for problems at N.C. State and vowed to help solve them.

"It's inappropriate and it's wrong to have a student athlete, who is not as serious about his academics and progressing as (he) ought to be, being able to participate (in athletics)," he said. "And that's something which I say was wrong and will never happen again nMore basketball Former Ohio State standout Jay Burson has turned down an offer to try out for the new Columbus Horizon of the Continental Basketball Association.
