Hollywood could do some thing with a The authenticity is stunning. A leader of the miners' wives cheerfully stashes a pistol in her bosom. Strikers file past the open coffin of theirfellow miner.

UMW President Tony Boyle gantly declares his intention to remain in office until he's 180. later, after his conviction for the murder of Jake Yablonsky and Yablonsky's wife and daughter, he looks it. The photography, principally credited to Hart Perry, is straightforward, crisp and frequently so in the midst of the action that one wonders how the camera got there. Black and white footage of early coal mine conditions lends perspective to the present. And local ballads provide the perfect score.

Kopple began work on "Harlan County" the year before a strike began at Kentucky's Brookside Mine in 1973, followed through withtheadmissionof the United Mine Workers Union a year later, and stayed on for subsequent developments in the economically depressed community. Occasionally, a single word description will fit a movie, and the lone word that best typifies "assault On Paradise" is "dumb." As this reviewer sat through this weak hour-and-a-half melodrama, that one word kept coming to mind.

With a bit more believable Presents the script has them in control of everything. A weirdo who dresses in Indian garb and war paint, and uses a bow and arrow as his principal weapon, goes around shooting cops from ambush, and otherwise causes havoc. He offers a threatening note saying he wants a million dollars in cash to halt his terror tactics. A hot shot internationally-known investigatorf'expert" is called in to help solve things, but while he puts on a good act, he isn't much better than the inept locals. Albuquerque freelance writer Chuck Mittlestadt contributes movie articles to the Journal.
