Csonka was not a factor as the Dolphins lost to the Cowboys 24-3 in Super Bowl VI. But in Super Bowl VTJ he rushed for 112 yards in 15 carries as Miami capped a 17-0 season by beating Washington 14-7. That was followed by an MVP award in Super Bowl VLTI as Csonka rushed for 145 yards on 33 carries in Miami's 24-7 victory over the Vikings. Power against power Those were near-perfect days as running mate Jim Klick and Csonka played off the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" image, becoming media darlings. Csonka's bull-like jaunts into the line and past it became his legacy.

"I didn't think of myself as a great all-around athlete who could make contributions in many facets of, the game," Csonka said. "My role was to make the running game work. A lot of plays I ran were momentum plays. They weren't designed for long gains. If you made 4 or 5 yards, everyone was happy.

"My most basic satisfaction from football was third-and-1, when everybody in the stadium knew what was coming," he said. "It was just fundamental. Power against power." Many critics though Csonka's career showed more dollars than sense in 1975 when he signed a multi-million dollar pact with the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League. When that league folded and quickly Csonka spent three inglorious years with the New York Giants, rushing for a total of 1,344 yards Browns picked in three Pro Bowls. HALL OF head Don BORN: Jan.

Fame returned briefly in 1979 with a return to the Dolphins, but quickly faded in 1980. Miami owner Joe Robbie offered Csonka a 1-year contract worth $230,000 and Csonka held out for $250,000.

The $20,000 difference spelled retirement. Csonka finished his pro career with 8,081 yards rushing, which is No. 10 on the all-time list, and 68 touchdowns. Almost as impressive was that he lost only 21 fumbles in 1,997 carries and pass receptions, an average of one every 95 possessions. Browns' loss Chiefs' gain For Len Dawson, 1961 was the end, 1962 the beginning.

After throwing 45 passes in five years in the NFL (1957-61), Dawson wanted a fresh start and asked Paul Brown for his release, which was given. Gladly. Then, Dawson was approached by Stram, who as an assistant at Purdue had coached Dawson and who then was head coach of the Dallas Texans in the fledgling American Football League. "To this day, I thank Paul Brown for my release," Dawson said. "I would have liked to have been successful in Cleveland, but it didn't happen.

I was ready to get a real job when Hank Stram called. "Right away, I found out how rusty I was. I hadn't played two weeks in a row for five years and my skills had eroded. Hank told me much afterward that he couldn't believe how much I had slipped. But I knew this was my last trip.

If it didn't work out, it was out of football. So it was back to basics and I can't believe how it all worked out." Neither can the critics who had written him off. In 1962, Dawson quarterbacked the Texans to the AFL title, leading the league in passing. The next year, the team moved to Kansas City and success followed. Dawson led the AFL in passing in 1964, '66 and '68 as the Chiefs were one of the dominant teams.

His legacy came in Super Bowls I and IV. In the first one, his Chiefs predictably lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-10. Three years later, he was named MVP as the Chiefs registered a 23-7 upset of the Vikings. That was the last game ever for an AFL team and allowed the league to even the Super Bowl series at 2-2 before the NFL-AFL merger. "That first Super Bowl, we talked like we could win, but deep down we knew we couldn't," Dawson said.

"The second one we had a genuine feeling we could win. "The Super Bowl isn't just the game, it's all the things that go with it. Once we had gone through it, we knew what to expect, it wasn't a mystery." Dawson had added pressure on him in Super Bowl IV because, during the preceding week, he was linked to a federal gambling investigation. He later was cleared of all wrongdoing. Dawson retired in 1975 with some awesome statistics: 2,136 completions in 3,741 attempts for 28,711 yards and 239 touchdowns.

And, like Csonka, he was virtually mistake-free with only 183 interceptions. Larry Csonka and Len Dawson are back in Northeast Ohio. Continued from page Dl cases, unique in that they grew up just a third-and-long from the Hall of Fame itself. "To me this has special significance because I'm coming back home," said Dawson, a native of Alliance whose career spanned 19 years, the best with the Kansas City Chiefs. "This is a time in my life when I can look back and think of all the people in Alliance who helped me my brothers, the coaches, the adults, everybody who meant so much to me.

"When you grow up in this area, you realize how much football means to people. I grew up hearing about the Canton Bulldogs, Jim Thorpe and the Cleveland Browns with all their great players," added Dawson, 52, now sports director at KMBC-TV in Kansas City. "I just never dreamed I would be going into the Hall of Fame. It is a thrill." Csonka, a Stow native, saw his induction as an imitation of immortality. "For the last five years, it seems that I've been talking about what was," said Csonka, 41, who is now involved in a variety of business interests in Florida in addition to his beer and Ford commercials.

"Like all old pros, the 'was' fades. To suddenly be cast Into the 'is' again to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is like living forever." Stardom comes early The football careers of Csonka and Dawson have had some differences, of course, but they also have been marked by similarities. In high school, predictably, both excelled. As a junior at Stow High in 1962, Csonka helped lead the Bulldogs to a 9-1 record and their first Metro League title in 21 years. The following year, Stow dropped to 3-6-1, but co-captain Csonka's punishing style earned him All-Metro status and the attention of scouts.

Dawson was All-Ohio as a linebacker in 1951 and as a quarterback in 1952. His threw for 3,107 yards and 26 touchdowns in two years, both still school records. Each competed in two other sports in high school, Dawson basketball (All-Ohio) and baseball, and Csonka wrestling and track. Then, each moved on to a major college and there, ironically, each played the glamour position at his school. Legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder envisioned Csonka as a middle linebacker and tried him there in 1966, Csonka's sophomore year.

"Worst decision I ever made," Schwartzwalder told reporters. Soon, Schwartzwalder smartened up and moved Csonka to running back. "Best decision I ever made," said Ben. In roughly 2 seasons, Csonka ran for 2,934 yards on 597 carries, eclipsing the career rushing records of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Jim Nance and Floyd Little. Dawson was the first in the line of great Purdue quarterbacks: Bob Griese, Mike Phipps, Gary Danielson, Mark Herrmann, Scott Campbell and Jim Everett.

Dawson became the first player to lead the Big Ten in passing and total offense for three consecutive seasons (1954-56) and finished his career with 243 comple- Bee's Best Bret 7-9-1 P.Edwards 1-1 SEVENTH Pace, $2,200, 1 Mile. Inauspicious beginnings Then came the pros for the two All-Americans, and slow starts for both. In 1968, Csonka was a first-round pick of the Dolphins.

He suffered a series of concussions his first two years and rushed for only 540 yards in 1968 and 566 in 1969. The problem was corrected with a special water-cushioned helmet and an alteration of his running style no more head butting, the coaches said; instead, lead with the body. Dawson was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1957. A savior, the Rooney family thought, while the Browns were upset after having missed him and settling for a back by the name of Jim Brown. Dawson, however, was as much a savior as Charles Man-son.

He sat behind first Earl Mor-rall and then Bobby Layne. Then, in 1960, he became a savior again, this time with the Browns, who had traded for him. Same result, however, as Dawson had the best seat in the house behind Milt Plum. Out of the dark for both Csonka and Dawson came the dawn, however. For Csonka, it came in the form of head coach Don Shula and a bunch of guys named Griese, Warfield, Little, Langer.

For Dawson, it was Hank'Stram. The rest, as they say, is history. Csonka became the bruiser in Shula's bruising running attack. The Dolphins appeared in three consecutive Super Bowls (1971-73), and in those years Csonka SARATOGA RESULTS 1 Wild Women 5.20, 2.80, 2.20; Joanie's Pass 4.20, 2.80; September Breeze 2.60.
