VN I By ELIZABETH STALEY Journal TV-Radio Writer The folks Carson Communication Corp. aren't talking much about it, but it looks as if late-night entertainer Johnny Carson will be in competition with himself this fall.

The Carson-owned independent stations KNAT, Channel 23, in Albuquerque, and KVVU, Channel 5, in Las Vegas, have signed up to carry the syndicated late-night program "Thicke of the Night," starring talk-show host Akin Thicke, which is in Sopiernlvr. "Thicke nf ilto i.c-vvlopet'. by former wizard Frcu Silverman who worked inirctclus ur CHS and ABC before falling flat at NBC. And the speculation at Silverman's InterMedia Entertainment Co. is that Carson's stations will have little choice other than to air the 90-minute "Thicke" against all or part of the hourlong "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." (KNAT General Manager Bob Brewer and KWU General Manager Rusty Durante were out of town and unavailable for comment.

Officials of Carson Communication refused to comment.) "This isn't a program that (the stations) could put in prime time," said a spokesman for Silverman, who also was unavailable for comment. "But it's not quite as it seems," he said. "Carson is crazy as a fox. 'The Tonight Show' is making lots of profit for him and 'Thicke' is free to the stations they don't have to put any money into it and they get to sell nine minutes of commercials. It was obviously a business decision to increase the ratings at his stations and solidify his position in late-night television." "When I was at NBC, I knew we couldn't come up with anything better than Carson," Silverman told T-O'hle recently. "Now that I'm on o.hc- i ci I'm too of.

the u.uenu;i!i.y iu time pt'rioc'." Carson, who once was the undisputed Icing of late-night television, has seen his hefty audience eroded by reruns of "M'A'S'H," ABC's "Nightline," CBS' prime-time reruns and cable television offerings. What's more, "Thicke" should appeal to young adults who are wavering as Carson viewers. According to his biography, Thicke, 35, is "reminiscent of a young Johnny Carson." The host of Canada's No. 1-rated daytime program says his comedy is akin to "Monty Python Meets Art Linkletter's House Party." He has written for Flip Wilson, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor and produced "Fernwood 2-Night" and "America 2-Night." Thicke dreamed up Martin Mull's infamous scientific finding that "leisure suits cause cancer in rats." "Thicke of the Night," a 90-minute, five-nights-a-week show, has been syndicated in more than 80 markets. Fifteen ABC affiliates, four CBS affiliates and seven NBC stations have signed up, but for now, none of the NBC affiliates is going to drop Carson for Thicke.

This isn't the first time Carson's interest in KNAT has made waves. Last fall he sat on "The Tonight Show" set and plugged a mini-series airing on KNAT. The promotional spots, which aired only on KNAT, upset KOB general manager Jerry Danziger because Jcane Dixon's Horoscope 4 12 Answer to yesterday's puzzle. According to KOB promotion manager Dan Klint-worth, Danziger complained to the NBC brass in New York, who "to make amends" arranged for Carson to make four spots for KOB promoting both "The Tonight Show" and "Live Eyewitness News 4" at 10 p.m.

Carson reportedly "threw a temper tantrum" before being convinced to do the spots for KOB, which are still being aired periodically on Channel 4. 1 2 3 4 5p 6 I jjffijg 8 9 kT 77" pllilpi SHI -3 24 25 26 27 28 29 33 '41' HH 44 4 49 nil 11 I 14 Ti 4 12 today's sports section). If dummy ducks the spade jack, the defense has less trouble taking their three spade tricks. The play of the spade ace breaks even whenever East has the K-10-x-x and the defenders avoid a mishap. It loses the setting trick when East has K-9-x-x. Why not avoid mishaps and play for the extra chance.
