Mercury is used in lighting, thermometers, lab chemicals and even thermostats. When mercury is spilled, the vapors are very dangerous. Senior Lewis Gregoire remembers when he bit down on a thermometer as a child and had to be rushed to the hospital. He said getting thermometers out of school can only be positive. Senior Tiffany Bland said it's a good idea because the school is building a new science room and everything can be safe "It's time for a change and just a part of what we have to do," Bland said.

By Jennifer Del Vechio DAUY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER jdelvechlothejoufnalnet.com Greenwood Community High School is the first in the state pledging to keep mercury out of its building. Franklin and Clark-Pleasant schools are conducting mercury removal programs, but Greenwood is the first to call the Johnson County Solid Waste Management District office for a walk-through of their school to remove all mercury materials, said Melinda Antell, director of the district. Thursday morning, the school gave away its mercury products, from thermometers to liquid mercury used in science labs. That meant getting rid of some expensive equipment, including a $400 barometer." But Bill McFerran, the science department chairman, said it's worth it. Three grams of mercury can pollute a 60-acre lake.

Mervilde said the school is starting with freshmen to help them acclimate to the high school setting and not get lost in the shuffle of 2,000 students. The idea stemmed from research school officials have read from the Department of Education. The idea is to allow high school students to share some of the same teachers.

That means students are known well by their teachers, from study habits to attendance, said Assistant ON THE portion of the Sheek Road right of way. Denied a request to change the zoning of 141 E. "Before we'd talk about the English curriculum and not the kids, because we didn't share them," Suttle said.

Students are chosen based on a set of criteria. They cannot be honors or special-services students.

While some of the students are picked because they have been identified with poor grades, the rest are picked randomly through the school's computer. A student survey was done to determine what students thought. When asked if teachers care about their school success, 41 percent of freshmen in the program said they strongly agreed. Compare that to only 12 percent of freshmen who aren't in the program. As for whether teachers care about them as people, only 4 percent of freshmen in regular classes strongly agreed, compared to 23 percent of those freshmen in the program.

Mervilde said the school will look at expanding the program but first wants to concentrate on freshmen so they get a good first view of high school. E.C. Martin vs. James L. Martin Pamela Lee vs.
