EIGHT BECKLEY POST-HERALD, BECKLEY, W. TUESDAY 10, 1959 Pour More Join Football Hall Of Fame Richwood Closes Season With Win Over Grizzlies iRIOHWOOD The Richiwood Lumberjacks closed their '59 football season here Monday night by defeating the Summers- vile Grizzlies 14-0 in a New River Valley Conference tussle. This was the third win for the Lumberjacks in conference play and left them with an even 3-3 conference record and undisputed possession of fifth place. The loss placed the Grizzlies in sixth place in the conference standings with a 2-4 record for the season. Weather Cancels College Contest GRAND FORSK, (AP) -The North Dakota Idaho State football game, scheduled here Nov.

11, has been cancelled by mutual agreement. L. R. Marti, acting director of athletics at North Dakota, said weather conditions make the game a poor risk. Temperatures, fell to one above zero Friday and about two inches of ground.

snow was on the Overall the Lumberjacks record read 54 while the grizzlies finished up with a 4-5-1 slate. In the game the Lumberjacks jumped out front by taking ad- vantage of a Grizzlie fumble in 'the first period. The Grizzlies fumbled on their own 45 yard line and the Lumberjacks put on a sustained drive with Howard Osborne going over from 17 yards out for the score. Doug Stewart put the Lumberjacks ahead 7-0 with the extra point The two teams then fought to a scoreless tie for two periods but the Lumberjacks again scored in the final period. Summersville punted to the 15 and the Lumberjacks started blazing a trail dowreield.

Jarrell Parrish climaxed the Lumberjacks 85 yard sustained drive with a 30-yard scamper into paycELrt for the final touchdown of the night Again Stewart's placement was true and the Lumberjacks added their fifth victory to the record books and closed the season with a winning record. Mi MKI If: KfllfflWL BOTUBS PMBBCIS Sports Jottings-Votes Scarce For From Section By George Springer Despite, the admonitions in this column a week or so ago, the high school coaches in this section did not do a very good job of returning their All-State football ballots to Chairman Bill Bflb of the Wheeling In- telligencer. lt seems a shame, too since some of the boys in this area may not receive the recognition that might be due them.

five of the six members-appointed to a regional board committee did meet here Saturday to go over candidates for the all-state teams. The one who didn't show certainly didn't do his area a favor, because again, some of the schools he participated against, may not receive the proper recognition. I migrht state that the All- State meeting in Charleston on Sunday, practically a nine- hour affair, handled very well by Chairman Bibb. The members were well satisfied with bis rulings when it came to many tough situations bound to crop" up in a meeting of dii- ferent minds. The results of Sunday's meeting will be announced some- time before Dec.

7, date set for the annual Victory Awards dinner in Charleston. The members of the first. All-State team will be invited to attend that affair, with the ticket backing of some of their booster clubs or fellow townsmen. I can also say that the committee that met here at the Elks Lodge; did a faithful job, not overlooking any of the boys thought deserving and in one case, a coach unable to make it, called ia with a list of the boys he had seen play from his -area. Again there is also the note that in picking even three All- State teams in each classification, not all of the boys' get the proper recognition.

You know that when you can only pick sis: ends on the first three teams of a class squad, there are bound to be many who didn't make it. And the -same holds true, in the other positions. And this repeat to the boys that if you've played the game for ail during the fall, you are an All-Stater in your own heart and no one can take that away from you. The football season is certainly at its fag end for this area. All but three of the iass A schools have hung up their cleats.

Ansted had a tilt with Bridge. Then there's that Greenhrier Valley Conference, game on tap between RalneDe and White Snlphar, taking place on the latter's field Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. All Class AA and Class AAA schools will close this week. Top game, locally, of course, is Beckley's traditional tussle with Hinton, which is also Hall of Fame Night, when new members will inducted into that select group of former Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagle gridmen. The state playoffs wfll be very much in the eye for this section, for the Coalfield Conference has qualified its two champs--Triple A and Double A--in the big games.

Blucfield has already been established as the contender against in Charleston a week from Saturday. The Coalfield AAA champs have a game with traditional Princeton this Friday and are heavy favorites inasmuch as the Tigers are down this year. It has evidently been established that even a loss by the Beavers will not push them out, of the playoffs and certainly in the Coalfield ratings, Bluefield cannot lose that crown suffering a loss to Princeton, nor can it lose the Southeastern West Viryinfe Post-Herald trophy. Whether the Coalfield AA champion Mullens team. Coalfield In Picture will appear in a playoff is still up in the air due to the.

fact that Keyser has games remaining and even some of its opponents who could bring them bonus points play right through Thanksgiving day--another reason why out of "state games should not count in the ratings. Sissonville is also in the Class AA picture and like. Mullens has concluded its season. TRAINING BEGINS Austria (AfP). Alpine ski-aces Monday began their snow training here- for the 1960 Olympic winter games at Squaw Valley, Calif.

State and Salem will clash in a playofif jame to decide the football championship of the State College Conference will not be known untfl this weekend.

Conference President John Pence, also the president of Fairmont State, said the matter of a playoff game will be decided by a committee made upof President Stanley Martin oi West Virginia Wesleyan, Glenville State Coach Nick Murrin and Fairmont Athletic Director: Squibb Wilson. said the matter was turned over to the committee after a re-poll of the 17-team conference showed eight members for the playoff game and eight against, with one abstaining. The committee, "however, be unable to meet with the Fairmont and. Salecn coaches until this weekend because Dr. Martin is away on business until Friday.

The three-man committee was named at the conference meeting at Wheeling last spring to handle such situations, Pence said. Fairmont won the western division with an 8-Q record while Salem ended up at the top of the eastern division with a 7-1 record. Salem's lone loss was to Fairmont by a 13-6 score. CHSAKLESTON (-ASP) --Former college teammates will coach Ravens-wood and Witifield in the playoff game for the state's Class A football championship.

The friendly rivals are Jam Spano, in his sixth season at Rave nswood, and Leon McCoy, successful Winfield coach. Their teams meet at SPoint Pleasant Saturday in the title playoff. Spano's Red Devils won the Little Kanawha Conference title last Friday beat Ripley. night when they That gave Ravenswood a 9-1 record for regular season play and a 40-16-3 showing under Spano's leadership. The only loss this season was to Marietta, Ohio, ranked in that state's top 10.

The Triple-A Ohio school trounced Ravenswood, Spano said he has wanted to play Winfield for about five years. He respects McCoy's Generals, too, observing that Ravenswood is a little foigger physically but Winfield has the team speed. The two playoff coaches were on outstanding teams at Morris Harvey College here. Spano was a middfe guard on defense and McCoy a standout center both offensively and defensively MH- Coach Eddie King. Spano was graduated from Morris Harvey in 1953 and played that fall for the Bainibridge, Navy Base team.

He injured his ear in the last game and -became a coach afterward. His first year at the booming, aluminum producting community in Jackson County produced a lean three victories and sev- en'losses. The record jumped to 7-2-1 in 1955 and 8-2 the next season. Ravens-wood won nine and lost one in 1957, including a 3513 triumph over Rupert in the Class championship playoff. Last year, the Red Devils won ur, lost four and tied two.

This season's playofif game dll be the last chance for Ra- ensavood to capture the small school crown. Spano said "if we keeo goin3 like we are now -we'll be triple."
