Tyson Breaks Hand in Brawl With Ex-Foe BASKETBALL: Former Lobos star Hunter Greene will play professional basketball in France this coming season. Greene, the Lobos career scoring leader, will play and live in Voiron, a city of about 15,000 in southeast France between Lyon and Grenoble. Bill Pollak, Greene's agent, said the ex-Lobo hopes to improve his ballhandling and outside shooting skills and make another attempt to make the NBA next year. Bill Musselman, who used to tell the University of Minnesota basketball team that "losing is worse than death," was introduced in Minneapolis as the first head coach of the NBA expansion Minnesota Timberwolves. Musselman, 48, was signed to a four-year contract at an undisclosed salary by the Timberwolves, who begin play in the 1989-90 season.

FOOTBALL: The Tempe City Council and several key city officials have received $10,000 worth of Phoenix Cardinals tickets in exchange for the National Football League team's use of a city-owned parking lot west of Sun Devil Stadium. Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney 87, lay in a coma in grave condition Tuesday following a stroke from which his doctors fear he may not recover. Rooney was hospitalized Wednesday after becoming dizzy at Steelers offices at Three Rivers Stadium. Family doctor Theodore Gelet said he was pessimistic about Rooney's chances for survival. MISCELLANY: Brigham Young has been picked as the High Country Athletic Conference volleyball title favorite in a poll of the league's seven coaches.

BYU received 47 points, including five first-place votes, followed by Colorado State with 42 points and two first-place votes. New Mexico State (30) was third, followed by New Mexico (28), Wyoming, Utah State and Utah NEW YORK Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson oroke a bone in his right hand during a street fight early Tuesday with former boxing opponent Mitch Green, the champion confirmed Tuesday night. During a news conference at which Tyson appeared wearing a cast on his right hand, the champion said the injury was a hairline fracture of the third metacarpal of the right hand. Tyson's manager, Bill Cayton, said he didn't know yet whether Tyson's Oct. 8 fight against Frank Bruno at London, England would have to be rescheduled because of the injury.

Tyson claimed that Green, a one-time Tyson opponent, ripped his shirt and started the fight as Tyson was getting into his car early Tuesday morning. The pair exchanged punches, with Tyson injuring his right hand, Tyson said. According to police spokesman Sgt. John Clifford, Green told investigators that the fight took place outside an From Wire and Staff Reports after-hours club in Harlem. Green said that during the argument "Tyson popped him on the bridge of his nose," Clifford said.

The injury required five stitches, he said. Police were investigating and no charges had been filed. BOXING: Thomas Hearns, the first fighter to win world titles in four weight divisions, will shoot for a fifth championship when he meets WBA super middleweight champion Fulgencio Obelmejias on Nov. 4, promoters announced. Albuquerque junior welterweight Steve Barreras won a four-round unanimous decision over Los Angeles' Eddie Hernandez in Irvine, Calif.

Barreras knocked down Hernandez in the first round in making a successful professional debut. "No way, Jose It's your turn to go in after it." An attorney for University of Kentucky recruit Chris Mills said the standout enrolled at the school because it was too early to determine what effect an NCAA investigation into his recruitment would have on his eligibility.
