Laney said they wanted to review public testimony, as well as comments e-mailed, mailed, faxed and called in to the department recently. Concerns about roadside memorials arose earlier this year, after state transportation officials in Tyler put notices next to non-DWI-related memorials saying that they would soon be removed. Since 1986, Texas law has allowed markers in the right of way at sites of fatal crashes that involved drunken drivers so long as those memorials were wooden and no taller than 30 inches or wider than 18 inches. Robert Hatfield of Tyler said crosses or the proposed state signs could show respect to those who die in traffic And the state signs wouldn't only honor those who die in drunk driving accidents, but those who die in any type of traffic accidents, he said. "I understand the need for remembrance two of our four children have died," said Scripps Howard News Service AUSTIN, Texas Brian Poole's son, Larry, was single, smart, had a great sense of humor and was killed by a drunken driver in Houston 17 years ago.

Poole marked the site where his 31-year-old son died with a simple white cross, engraved with his name. This week, he and others protested a plan by state transportation officials to remove such crosses and replace them with state-issued roadside markers. "To take these crosses up is a sacrilege," a tearful Poole said. "They mean a tremendous amount to people" Texas Transportation Commissioners delayed a decision on the controversial measure that would charge victims' families $100 for the state-issued signs and require them to be taken down after Vk years. "This is a very sensitive issue and very emotional to all involved," Commissioner Robert L.

Nichols said. "The commission has listened to each of you." TAMF. Fla. Norvin Frank Batchellor Norvin Frank Batchellor, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Rocky Creek Village in Tampa, Fla.

Heart study faults managed care Caring forviYr 100 mirs Wilson 7 Pierre Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine It was carried out by researchers at a group of Boston hospitals and the U.S.

General Accounting Office They collected records on patients admitted to hospitals in seven states for eight months in 1994-95. They counted how many underwent the angiograms. The test, which costs about $2,500, can help doctors make critical decisions about treatment. The researchers set out to compare treatment under the two types of insurance. They were surprised to discover that striking numbers of patients in both groups fail to undergo the test when it is medically warranted dwarfed by the overall underuti-lization," said Dr.

The test, called an angiogram, is often performed to check blood flow through clogged heart arteries after heart attacks.

The study found that patients in managed care were 12 percentage points less likely than those with traditional insurance to get the exam, even when their conditions clearly suggested they should.
