Pierre Brothers Cunningham O'Connor, Hollywood Godfrey Baseley; Founder of Longest-Running Radio Serial Godfrey Baseley, 92, founder of the world's longest-running radio serial, "The Archers." In 1948, Baseley suggested that the BBC broadcast a daily radio program based on characters living in a small farming community.

The intention was to help modernize agricultural production after World War II. The first program was broadcast Jan. 1, 1951, and the series is still running today. The program originally contained some farm information, but the story of the family quickly took over. Within two years, the family of Dan and Doris Archer at Brookfield Farm in the fictional village of Ambridge had an audience of 9.5 million.

Nelson, a conservative former commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, has died. He was 63. Nelson, a San Francisco Bay Area lawyer, died Thursday in Sacramento. He was most recently in the news in 1994 as co-author of Proposition 187, the controversial measure to cut off government services to illegal immigrants.

Nelson said in the successful campaign for the initiative that sponsors wanted the courts to examine its, legality, which they have been doing. Nelson was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan to head the INS in 1982 and served until 1989. During his tenure, Nelson assisted in the enactment of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, cutting illegal immigration in half and granting legal status to about 3 million immigrants. He also worked to develop the INS as a leader in anti-drug efforts, including drug education and seizure of contraband at the Mexican border. When Reagan was governor of California, Nelson was assistant director of the California Human Resource Department from 1969 through 1971 and became director of the California Department of Rehabilitation.

After serving in the INS, Nelson was general counsel for the California Employment Development Department in 1990 and 1991. Born in Oakland, Nelson earned degrees in business education and law from UC Berkeley. He practiced law in San Francisco and Sacramento and from 1964 to 1969 was a deputy district attorney in Alameda County. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, JoAnn Wallen Nelson; three daughters, Kristy Nelson Leffers, Kathy Turner and Karin Nelson, and one granddaughter. The family has asked that any memorial donations be made to the Greenhaven Lutheran Church in Sacramento or to the American Diabetes 10445 Old Placer -ville Road, Sacramento CA 95827.

Eule, a professor of law at UCLA since 1985, was frequently consulted by news media and political figures about the role of voter initiatives in, emerging democracies. He wrote and lectured extensively on the including a talk at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, in 1995. He recommended that judiciary branches of government examine initiatives! that result from direct democracy to assess their constitutionality. Also an! expert on constitutional law and affirmative action, Eule earned degrees from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Cornell and Harvard Law School. He practiced law in New York City and in the mid-1970s was legal counsel to then-Connecticut Gov.

Harman, 78, former UC regent, author and social scientist. Harman had recently served as president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Sausalito, an organization that fosters research and education about the mind. A former Stanford professor of engineering, Harman wrote several books, including "Global Mind Change" and "An Incomplete Guide to the Future." He was named to the UC Board of Regents by Gov. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown Jr.

in 1970 and served for 10 years. For 16, years before joining the Sausalito group, Harman was a senior social scientist at Stanford Research Institute International in Menlo Park. On Thursday in Stanford of brain cancer. Howard Hlrsch; Interior Designer of Luxury Hotels Howard Hirsch, 70, internationally known interior designer of luxury hotels. Hirsch, co-founder of the HirschBedner Associates, based in Santa Monica, was responsible locally for the recent redesign of the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Hirsch and his firm were also the first American designers to build a major hotel in the People's Republic of China the White Swan in Guangzhou, begun in 1983. His other projects include the Hyatt Regency Maui and the Kahala Mandarin in Hawaii, the Hyatt Carlton Tower in London, the Four Seasons in Singapore and several Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt Hotels. Born in Chicago, Hirsch studied at the Chicago Art Institute and in Paris at the Sorbonne and the Ecole de Louvre. He often likened hotel design to theater creating dramatic backdrops for guests who become the actors in the hotel environment. On Saturday in Los Angeles of lymphoma.

John W. Luke; Former IBM Research Expert, Founded Consultancy John W. Luke, 72, former research expert for IBM and Computer Sciences Corp. A native of Astoria, N.Y., Luke earned degrees at the University of Utah, Stanford and USC. He spent the first 18 years of his career with IBM, rising to director of the company's Palo Alto Scientific Center.

Luke joined Computer Sciences Corp. in 1968 and became president of its Data Services Group. In 1983, he founded International Senior Management Inc. to consult with venture capital portfolio companies. On Monday in Palos Verdes of cancer.

Sanford Melsner; Renowned Acting Teacher rtxlay, January at, uni at m-City Medical Center in Oceanside. Born January 16, 1916 in Los An- Oles, he lived in Oceanside for years. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Merkiay; his daughter, Leslie Park; his son, Craig Park and wife, Linda and grandson, Trevor Park. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Park of Los Angeles; his sister, Suzanne Johnson of Long Beach; his sister, Barbara Corso of Kennsington, California. A World War II veteran, he served in the Asiatic Pacific campaign as a Tech Sergeant in the Army from 1942 to 1945.

He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Los Angeles City College in 1951. He worked for 32 years in the aerospace engineering divisions of McDonnell Douglas and Hughes Aircraft Prior to retiring to Oceanside he lived for 25 years in Manhattan Beach, California and 9 years in Pico Rivera, California. Mr. Park was an avid life-long gardener and photographer, and his talents and love of both will be remembered by all who knew him. Bosler worked with Kay Manufacturing in Huntington Park for 20 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in South Gate. Leo and Hazel moved to Lake Elsinore 12 years besides his wife, Leo is survived by his daughter, Marlene, son-in-law, Eddie Lucero and two granddaughters, Diane and Brenda, all of Torrance; three brothers: Cody of Yakima, Washington, Nick of Mc-Cleary, Washington, and George of Lacy, Washington; two sisters. HONN, Charles of Camarillo, passed away February 1, 1997 at St John's Pleasant Valley Hospital at the age of 78, after a battle with cancer. All who knew and loved him will miss his kindness, his courage, and lus wisdom. He was bom in Portervtlle, California on May 26, 1918, and was married to Ruth Buck in 1942. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Eastern Washington at Cheney and his Master's degree from the University of Southern California in Education. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He originally came to Ventura County as a teacher in Rio School District Oxnard, later moving to Pleasant Valley School District in Camarillo in 1952. He became Principal of the only school in the district-Pleasant Valley School-in 1954. In 1957, he became Superintendant of the district and remained in that position until his retirement in 1978. During his tenure with Pleasant Valley School District the district grew from one to thirteen schools. Charles was active in the Rotary Club of Camarillo, having served as its President.

He was a founder of the Camarillo Rotary Track Meet and for many years acted as the co-chair of the event. When he and Ruth lost two of their three sons in a drowning accident in 1962, the Rotary Club established the Honn Memorial Scholarship to assist local high school seniors with college. He was a founder of the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum, a member of the Decent Council, and a member of the Board of Directors of that organization. He and Ruth were given the honors of Don and Dona by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society in 1989. The Charles L.

Honn Museum Park and Botanical Garden was named in his honor In 1995, reflecting his committment to the Garden and the Museum. In 1989, Charles was named Man of the Year for Camarillo in honor of his many years of service to the community. He has long been an active member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, and served on the Executive Committee of the Building Council during the construction of the new church building. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Rich, and daughter-in-law, Marguerite Ann; two grandchildren, Emily (4), and Carrie (2), of Pasadena; his brother, Gerry, of Spokane, Washington; and sister, Jean, of Vancouver, Washington. He was preceded in death by two of his sons, Robert and William; and his brother, Robert A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm, Wednesday, February 5, 1997 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Camarillo.

The innovative organization, which included Lee Strasberg, Elia Kazan and other theatrical leaders, was founded in 1931. Meisner appeared in 12 of its early productions including its first, "The House of Connelly." Meisner also acted on Broadway in "Embezzled," "Crime and Punishment" and "The Cold Wind and the Warm." In 1936 he became head of the acting department of New York's Neighborhood Playhouse. In 1990, public television aired a laudatory special about Meisner's half-century of teaching his craft, called "Sanford Meisnen The Theater's Best Kept Secret." Government's international broadcasting service, died on Monday, February 3, 1997 of brain cancer at the Hebrew Home in Rockville, Maryland. It was his second bout with the disease in 15 years. Mr. Schneider, who worked at VOA since 1971, was the longtime writer of 'American Moments', a dally feature focusing upon important events in American history. It is the single most popular feature among VGA's 52 language broadcast services.

Previously, Mr. Schneider served as VOA's West Coast correspondent based in Los Before joining VOA, Mr. Schneider was a writer for CBS and NBC News in New York, a news producer for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, and an editorial writer and reporter at WLWC-TV in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Schneider received two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Journalism (1967) and the other in Broadcasting (1968), both from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

He was a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He graduated from Miami Beach High School in Florida. He was bom in Brooklyn, New York. A resident of Bethesda, Maryland, Mr. Schneider was President of the Woodlawn Citizens Association, and served on the Board of Directors at the Seven Locks Pool.

In Californi-, he served on the Board of Directors of the Cross Creek Condominium In Playa del Rey. Mr. Schneider is survived by his wife, Carol, a son, Marcy Scott and daughter, Janna Michal, all of Bethesda. Survivors also include his mother, Florence Marchese and a sister, Gina Marchese, both of Miami Beach. Viewing will be from 7pm to 9pm.

A native of Los Angeles, Takei was a teenager when his family was taken to Arkansas during the war. Returning to Los Angeles, he worked as a grocery clerk and in 1954 began his labor career. He spent 40 years as negotiator, organizer, executive board member and assistant to the president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, one of the city's largest unions. He I recruited Asian Pacific Americans to join various unions and advance in leadership roles.

In 1987, he formed the Alliance of Asian Pacific Labor. He also helped create the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance AFL-CIO, the first national labor organization for Asian Americans. As television developed, he had guest roles on many series, including "Columbo," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Rhoda," "Lou Grant," "Picket Fences" and "St. Elsewhere." He also appeared in several television movies, among them "Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell," "The Time Machine," "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "Murder in Malibu." Zuckert's Broadway credits include "First Monday in October," "Abraham Lincoln" and "A Man for All Seasons." He also appeared in movies and most recently worked on the independent film "Happy Together." Among his motion picture credits are "Ace Ventura Pet Detective," "Naked Gun," "Bank Robbers," "Blazing Saddles," "F.I.S.T." and "How to Frame a Figg." Zuckert served on the boards of directors of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild.
