Charterhouse, $9.95, Livesey doesnt like college professors. He thinks that they're immodest, arrogant, indolent and craven bullies. He also thinks they've got the eushiest job there is: one-third of each year off with pay every 7th year off with at least half-pay; 3 or 4-day weeks; free college tuition for their offspring; golden opportunities for moonlighting; veneration of students and community.

And clothing is not an expen-. sive item for most professors; a couple of work shirts, jeans, a pair of sandals and corduroy jacket are enought Transportation is by Volkswagen or some other small foreign car; to be really de rigueur it must be at least 5 years old and dusty. Livesey interviews several of these illuminati and though he concedes that they don't all fit the noxious mold, enought Kripalu Yoga Ashram, Sum-neytown, The dance improvisation class on June 15 will feature special accompaniment by George Bishop of Philadelphia on clarinet. beth Waters, has performed with the Delaware Valley Dancers of Faith and the Terez-Nelson Dance Company and has taught at the Delaware Art Museum, University of Delaware and the Chester County Art Center. Sita Devi and Ganga Devi are disciples of Yogi Amrit Desai. founder-director of the this energy through dance an movement techniques. Workshop teachers are Cappy Millstein, Dolores Josey, Sita Devi and Ganga Devi. Miss Millstein has studied modern dance with Anne Berlin and Joan Kerr, Afro-Haitian dance with Ruth Beck-ford, yoga with Yogi Amrit Desai and has a strong background in folk dance.

She has taught at community centers in Los angeles, Berkeley, Philadlephia, West Chester and Wilmington and currently works with Wilmington's Prime Movers and the Joan Kerr Dance Company of Philadelphia. Mrs. Josey, a member of the Prime Movers, has studied with Alwin Nikoliais, Murray Louis, Yvonne Rainer Barbara Mettler. Joan Kerr and Eliza- of them do to make him believe some reforms are in order for them and their institutions. In some cases the remedies he suggests seem worse than the maladies but, as he says, it would make good sense for universities to top propagating doctoral programs whose quality is questionalbe.

And also cooperate more with one another so that three institutions within 5 miles of one another won't be offering courses in the mathematical aptitude Neanderthal man. Tenure should be granted only to those 55 or older, he believes, and the teaching function should be separated from research. Livesey, director of admissions at New York University, lets his prejudices show, but he's written a very provocative book that surely will raise some professorial hackles. Mary M. Baker Uneven essays W.

H. AUDEN, a Tribute, edited by Stephen Spender. MacMUlan. $14.95. This is more a collector's item than a general circulation book.

It is a collection of essays by Auden's friends and peers, plows into a ravine. Theodora Creaturo, the hooker, is killed instantly. Carlie Berlatsky, a junk jew-lery salesman and all-time loser, sees the Cadillac as it goes off the highway. He climbs out of his car and helps the judge out of the wreckage and drives him to a nearby motel to get him in bed and calls for medical care. Charlie is unaware that Theodora is down in the ravine under the wreckage.

Much to his surprise, Stevens refuses medical care, which makes Charlie somewhat curious and suspicious. Later that night he goes back to the ravine and discovers the hooker's body as wellas a number of folios and placards, all campaing material for "John Kenneth Stevens for Governor." Charlie now begins to guess why the judge wants no medical care, thus no publicity. Charlie and Judge Stevens make a deal which neither can refuse. A clear case of is exactly what it amounts to. This is where the suspense and action begin.

Night Stop keeps the reader entertained right down to the very last paragraph. Charlotte Walker a classmate or two at St Edmunds, the English public school attended by Auden, and people like Cyril Connolly and Louis Kronenberger. Some are better writers than others. Some even have something to say on the subject of Auden, the man. But some do not The arcane nature of some of the material suggests that true Auden buffs will be more enchanted by the book than Auden dabblers.

It is an effort more loving than brilliant more admiring than percep-! tive. Still, Auden fans will find it worthwhile. John D. Gates Suspenseful NIGHT STOP by Elleston Trevor. Doubleday.
