SUNDAY NEWS JOURNAL C3 AUG 21, 1994 solitmdle ffoir foramen Phillie Mooed Noles said he didn't have any strong feelings either way toward the current major league players strike, which began last "I really don't think about it too much," he said. "I just hope that when it's resolved that it's a win-win situation. "It's a great game of baseball that's being missed, but there's issues that have to be resolved. I'd like to see the players and owners both come out winners." his Delaware Semi-Pro career with in '91. But he was crafty.

He struck out three and walked three. More importantly, he played. When he's not out on the field, Noles has worked the past couple of years for the Phillies as a community consultant. His job no longer consists of throwing high-inside fastballs, but trying to make children "Just Say No" to drugs and alcohol. him." Noles, who struggled through drug and alcohol problems early in his major league career before seeking rehabilitation, says he's been going through some tough times personally and playing baseball is a good escape.

"I was with John Kruk Monday night at a celebrity event to benefit a Little Leaguer that was killed when he was hit by a pitch," said Noles, who had a 36-52 career record and a 4.56 ERA in the majors. "It started at 7 p.m. and I didn't think John Kruk would ever get tired of signing autographs. "That was refreshing. To see a major leaguer like John Kruk do all of this for the children really touched me.

I think it makes coming out to play that much easier. It reminds you that this is just a game, not life, and you should have fun playing it." Noles wasn't especially overpowering in his 2-0 victory over Guy Johnson, the team he started 1.1. 00 100 Special to The News Journal TIM SHAFFER Ex-Phlllie Dickie Noles fires one against Guy Johnson at Banning Park Tuesday. By MIKE FINNEY Stall reporter RICHARDSON PARK The color green seems to drive the game of baseball nowadays. That is, a green piece of paper with a picture of George Washington on it.

But for Dickie Noles, a baseball diamond provides an escape. It's greener pastures. When Noles trots out to the pitcher's mound, he says he feels like a kid at his first major league game, coming up through the tunnel to find his seat and catching that first glimpse of a meticulously groomed field. Maybe that's why Noles, who pitched for the Phillies for three years (1979-1981) during an 11-year career in the majors, insists on continuing his career in the Delaware Semi-Pro League. It's a far cry from facing George Brett and the Kansas City Royals in the 1980 World Series in front of a national television audience and 60,000 screaming fans at Veterans Stadium, but he loves the game of baseball just the same.

"If you've ever played the game of baseball, you find out that you can never get over it," said Noles, who plays on three Semi-Pro teams in the summer with his friend and catcher, Joe Singley. "Once it gets in your blood, it's just something that you have to do." Noles revived memories of the Phillies' early 1980s heyday at WITH THIS AO THRU 1 MRU StPT. -v 1 Banning Park Tuesday night. Some spectators arrived dressed in their Phillies gear and offered their support to the ex-major leaguer. The 37-year-old right-hander didn't disappoint the crowd as he threw a two-hit shutout for Delaware Sportscare, helping it even the best-of-seven Delaware Semi-Pro championship series against Guy Johnson at one game each. "I can remember when he dusted George Brett off the plate in the '80 series," said Delaware Sportscare teammate Mike Donovan, whose two-run single in the sixth gave Noles the win. "That might've turned the whole World Series around.

"It's great when he comes out to pitch for us," he added. "He comes out here just for the fun of it. I've never seen anybody play and have as much fun as he does. He just really loves the game." Singley looked over at Noles, playing catch with his twin sons on the field long after everybody else had departed Tuesday, in admiration. "Dickie is great for this type of ball," said Singley, who used to catch in the Chicago White Sox chain.

"These guys are all out here trying to hit him.
